"Hotels in Holland Park, London"
Holland Park is a fantastic area to stay in as it enjoys a location close to the major sights and attractions of Kensington, the Exhibition Centres at Earls Court and Olympia and the shops at Notting Hill. Stretching from High Street Kensington along Holland Park Avenue, the area is picturesque and peaceful and largely inhabited by young professionals and families. Much like the surrounding neighbourhoods it is a very affluent area, but it is much more laid back and trendy than South Kensington, which has a more staid atmosphere. It is a mix of large Victorian town houses and trendy modern flats along quiet mews streets.
Kensington High Street is considered to be a part of Holland Park as the area is the thoroughfare between Kensington and Earls Court. The high street offers some fantastic shops, restaurants and family friendly activities and some very exclusive clubs where you may have to do some bartering with the bouncers to get in. The high street culminates in Kensington Palace and Gardens, a stunning Christopher Wren designed building which was Princess Diana's home before her death and is now home to her son and his wife, also known as Kate and Wills, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, so you may see a young royal going about their daily business. The Palace offers tours and exhibitions and has a collection of Diana's dresses, and in the surrounding park you can visit the Princess Diana Memorial and a statue of Peter Pan, as the park was where J. M. Barrie met the family who inspired the story of the boy who never grew up.
After roaming the grounds, you can stop off for afternoon tea at The Orangery Restaurant or pop into one of the fashionable coffee shops along the high street. Along this stretch, you will also find the Linley Sambourne House, where you can see how a Victorian family really lived; Urban Golf, which is an uber trendy club house cum indoor, digital green for those who love the sport but hate the snobbery it entails; and many fantastic shops, from high street brands to independent boutiques and the delectable Whole Foods market where you can buy everything from rare cheese to vegan cake.
Further along down the high street, you will come across Holland Park, which is a fantastic place to while away a sunny afternoon. With a unique Japanese garden, a cricket pitch, tennis court, peacocks and a giant chess set, there will be plenty to keep kids amused. You can also see Holland House, once a meeting place for literati such as Lord Byron and Charles Dickens, now turned into a rather grand youth hostel.
To the west of Holland Park, you will find Earls Court and Olympia exhibition centres, which hold elaborate exhibitions, concerts and trade shows throughout the year, including The Royal Tournament and The Ideal Home Show. Due to Holland Park's proximity to Earls Court, roughly a 15-minute walk away, it is a very convenient place to stay for visitors and exhibitors alike. The markets of Shepherd's Bush are also nearby and the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire is a great venue for seeing up and coming bands and established acts.
Holland Park also has good transport links. High Street Kensington is the main tube station for the area, which services the District and Circle lines, from which you have a direct link to Paddington Station, where the Heathrow Express terminates; Victoria Station, where the Gatwick Express terminates; and King's Cross St Pancras, where you can catch the Eurostar for France and Belgium. Holland Park tube station services the Central line, from which you can arrive in central London in about ten minutes. Hotels in the area vary from the sky-high in Kensington to the budget in Earls Court, although some very affordable options can be found in Holland Park itself, and as it is equidistant from both areas, you can enjoy the best of both worlds.
