The Balkan is a budget bed and breakfast hotel set in a four storey Edwardian townhouse with bay windows, just on the corner of Shepherd’s Bush Road and Anley Road. The hotel is a five-minute walk from Shepherd’s Bush Green and about three miles from London’s centre. Shepherd’s Bush Road is a busy traffic thoroughfare with shops, restaurants and pubs linking Shepherd’s Bush with Hammersmith Broadway. Excellent public transport connections from Shepherd’s Bush mean that visitors can easily reach all the main tourist destinations.
The hotel offers only breakfast so you’ll be looking for dining options in the area. One of the closest eateries is the Raj of India, about 50 metres from the hotel on the other side of Shepherd’s Bush Road. You can’t miss its gleaming white frontage with Imperial style architectural embellishments. House specialities include Chicken Tikka Masalla, chicken cooked with spices, almonds and cashew nuts, and Lamb Pasanda, lamb cubes prepared with fresh cream, yoghurt and mixed nuts.
If you like Italian food, Renezio is a family-run neighbourhood restaurant just around the corner on Goldhawk Road, a five-minute walk away. It serves traditional Italian classics in a homely room with wood panelling. For a truly authentic London dining experience, try Cookes Pie & Mash Shop, also on Goldhawk Road, just across the street from Renezio. There you can sample jellied eels, stewed eels and beef pies all served with home made mash and gravy. This is a cuisine little changed since Victorian days.
If you’ve come to London to do some shopping, the Balkan is an excellent choice because it’s a 10-minute walk from Westfield, one of London’s largest and smartest shopping malls. Walk north along Shepherd’s Bush Road, turn right at Shepherd’s Bush Green and walk to the end of the Green – Westfield is now opposite, on the other side of the Green. As well as over 250 shops, the centre has more than 50 restaurants and a 14-screen multiplex. If you’ve money to spend, visit the dedicated luxury retail section of Westfield, The Village. There you’ll find outlets for designer labels like Gucci, Tiffany’s and Dior.
The Balkan has 19 bedrooms with neutral décor and simple furnishings. Guestroom amenities include TVs, free wifi, fridges and tea and coffee making facilities. Microwaves and hair dryers are available on request and room rates include a continental breakfast served from 7.30 to 9 am. Single, double, twin and triple rooms are all available, as are family rooms with a maximum capacity of six. Pets are not allowed.
London Underground’s Goldhawk Road Station is a five-minute walk from the Balkan. This station is on the Hammersmith and City, and Circle lines. Take the Hammersmith and City Line four stops to Ladbroke Grove, a six-minute journey. Alight there and you’re in Notting Hill with its famous annual Carnival, and a few steps from the Portobello Road Market. The market is open every day, but the best times to visit are Fridays and Saturdays, when there are the most stalls. You can browse through antiques, innovative designer clothing and bric-a-brac laid out over almost a mile of open-air stalls, shops and arcades.
Also from Goldhawk Road Station, You can take a 40-minute journey on the Circle Line to Tower Hill Station, the stop for the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.
The Balkan is less than a 10-minute walk from Shepherd’s Bush Station on the Central Line. This will get you to Oxford Circus in 12 minutes and St Paul’s Station, the stop for Sir Christopher Wren’s iconic cathedral, in 12 minutes.
If you’re arriving at Heathrow Airport, you can reach the hotel by taking the Piccadilly Line from the airport to Hammersmith Station. Change there for the Hammersmith & City Line, and it’s just one stop to Goldhawk Road.
