Imperial College's sprawling campus is in one of London's most exclusive and affluent districts, surrounded by history, culture and stunning Victorian and Edwardian architecture. It was originally founded in 1907 and offers students from over 126 countries 242 undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The College has an auspicious reputation and comes highly ranked in respected publications such as the Academic Ranking of World Universities and the times Higher Education World University Rankings. The College building may be predominantly modern, but the imposing Queen's Tower still remains from the original buildings and is worth visiting whilst in the area.
The College has the largest estate of any higher education facility in the UK, covering 525,233 square metres of space; containing over 40 departments, institutes and research centres. It has 3,300 academic and research staff, including 14 Nobel Prize winners; so prospective students can be assured that their educational needs are in safe hands. The College has a wide range of local accommodation to suit student budgets, and advice for students finding accommodation after the first year, so you will have full support whilst negotiating London's tricky accommodation hunt. Students staying in halls, and visitors to the College are particularly well placed for London's vibrant nightlife scene, with many pubs and bars nearby.
The main campus is a five-minute walk from South Kensington tube station, which has very convenient transport links for students and visitors to the College. South Kensington services the District, Circle and Piccadilly lines, from which you can go directly to Victoria Station (where you can transfer to Gatwick Airport); Paddington Station (where the Heathrow Express train terminates); Heathrow Airport; and King's Cross St Pancras (where the Eurostar terminates), so if you are arriving from the UK or abroad you will find your way to the College with ease. If you are arriving by car, the College is situated on the A4 road, which can be reached via the M25 and A1. During weekdays limited free parking is available, but only from 07:00 - 18:00, and 13,500 students attend the College, so space may be limited. Visitors may wish to use the National Car Parks in Semley Place or Warwick Road, which are each about a 15-minute walk from the campus.
For students on a prospective visit to the campus, or parents visiting from outside London, there are a number of cheap accommodation options nearby. The Gainsborough Hotel offers the cosy elegance of a British country home in an Edwardian townhouse at a very reasonable price just five minutes walk from the campus. The Gallery Hotel is also close by and has good rates for the area, offering charming traditional decor and comfortable, old English glamour.
If you are travelling as a family or if you prefer more privacy than a hotel offers, Harrington Court Serviced Apartments offer stylish, contemporary self-serviced units in Victorian surroundings. There are many attractions in the area, including the Science, Natural History and Victoria & Albert Museums on the same road as the entrance to the main college campus, so staying in the area means you will have a wide choice of activities. The Royal Albert Hall also has a wide programme of musical events and talks so you can plan a family night out.
A student budget may mean that window-shopping is the only option, but luckily Kensington and Knightsbridge nearby have some of the most enticing shop windows in London, with a wide range of designer and high street stores, and famed department stores such as Harvey Nichols and Harrods. This safe, picturesque area will guarantee an exciting campus life and a fascinating view of London and one of its renowned educational institutions for visitors.
