Search for cheap hotels near Italian Embassy
The Italian embassy of London is as grand inside as it is out, with the kind of neo-classical features you would expect from the country that invented the style. The Embassy sits on Grosvenor Square, close to the American Embassy, in the exclusive and very moneyed Mayfair district of London. There is a strong Italian community in the UK with 39,000 Italian born citizens in London alone, earning them the rather quaint, portmanteau nickname of 'Britalians'. This community makes a significant cultural contribution to the arts, economy and cuisine of London and the Embassy plays a significant role in bringing Italian culture to the masses.
Britain and Italy share a history that dates way back, to when the Romans ruled Londinium from 43 AD, and with our cultural heritages so entwined, it is important to maintain good relations with Italy and continue to promote Italian culture in the UK. Italy is also a popular holiday destination for those living in the UK, and whilst British citizens don't require VISAs to enter the country, residents of the UK with different nationalities may be required to apply for one. The Embassy can help you with any queries and the Consulate can help to process your VISA. The Embassy also helps students enter to study in the UK and UK students to study in Italy, via exchange programmes.
The Embassy is also keen to encourage trade between Italy and the UK, whether it involves the UK making a large investment in Italy or a small Italian business wishing to expand into the UK market, the Embassy can provide advice and assistance. The Embassy is also instrumental in maintaining bilateral relations between the two countries, from political cooperation concerning foreign and domestic policy, to nurturing the economy and the flow of trade, to assisting in the advancement of scientific and technological research through education, funding and fellowship positions.
The Embassy also has a stunning art collection, containing works by some of Italy's most renowned painters and sculptors such as Donatello, which can be viewed in the Italian Cultural Institute, which is affiliated with the Embassy. The Institute also holds monthly banquets to introduce new Italian produce into the UK. These delectable, wine-soaked evenings represent the best of Italian cuisine, so it is well worth trying to get your hands on a ticket. If these have sold out, the Institute also hosts talks, art exhibitions, recitals and theatre productions, some of which are free, so you should check to see what is on when you arrive.
Grosvenor Square is one of the most picturesque areas of London, and Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace and the exclusive shops of the Mayfair district are all close by, so it is a fantastic place to stay when visiting London, although the area is admittedly pricey. The Rose Court Hotel in Marble Arch, just a 10-minute walk away is the closest hotel, which also has reasonable room rates. Park Lane Mews Hotel is also close by and offers fairly affordable rates for such a well-heeled area. The Marylebone Hotel offers imaginative, funky interiors and the Radisson Edwardian Berkshire offers sophisticated accommodation in a superb location, minutes from Oxford Street shops.
