Kensington High Street is a fascinating mix of the historical and modern, with shops, restaurants and trendy bars jostling elbows with Palaces, churches and Victorian town houses. Strolling around this busy cosmopolitan part of London, you would never realise that at number 99, high up above ground level is a peaceful haven like no other in London. Admittedly, entry is strictly limited and if you aren't dressed to impress then you're not getting in, but if you are one of the select few who can secure a reservation at the Babylon Restaurant a floor below, can sweet talk the bouncers on a quiet night or you are lucky enough to be familiar with a member, Kensington Roof Gardens is one of the most exotic and relaxing places to enjoy a drink in London. The effort of trying to get in is worth it for the stunning views of Kensington alone.
With three landscaped gardens: Spanish, Tudor and English Woodland, set over 1.5 acres of rooftop, you'll forget that you're in the heart of a large metropolis. The gardens are filled with stunning flowering plants and more unusual sights such as fully grown oak trees and fish filled streams, and you can even make friends with one of the clubs' four resident flamingoes Bill, Ben, Splosh and Pecks. If you have an interest in urban horticulture, but lack the connections to ensure a visit, you can request a tour of the gardens by calling the manager.
Although the gardens themselves remain the real draw, especially in spring and summer when they are in full bloom and the British weather is a little more inviting, the interior of the club is as funky and stylish as you would expect for a club in one of London's most exclusive areas. With opulent furnishings in bright colours, cosy couches, cutting edge dance DJs and designer cocktails, you are guaranteed a glamorous night out with the most eligible company in London.
The Babylon restaurant on the 6th floor is perhaps the easiest way to secure access to the gardens (as long as no private events are taking place) and enjoy a delicious meal with fantastic views. The restaurant serves very fresh, contemporary British cuisine in elegant surroundings. In summer months you can dine al fresco on the terrace, and if you can't stretch to the hefty, prices typical of the area, a reasonable set menu is offered.
Although access to the club may be a hit or miss situation, staying in Kensington will always be a hit. Staying near the high street means you will be close to a fantastic range of activities, eateries and designer shops. The Kensington Close Hotel and Spa offers guests great amenities in cosy, comfortable rooms. The Copthorne Tara Hotel, just five minutes walk from a tube station is a great option for travellers who want a fantastic location on a budget. A little bit further out, the very family friendly Lodge Hotel" href="london-lodge-hotel-99.html" target="_self">London Lodge Hotel offers personalised service and traditional style with quirky touches.
The Kensington Roof Gardens are extremely well placed for transport within central London and further afield. High Street Kensington tube station is just a few minutes walk away. The station services the District and Circle lines, from which you have a direct link to Victoria Station (where the Gatwick Express Train terminates); Paddington Station (where the Heathrow Express Train terminates); and many other areas of central London. So even if you're request for entry is declined you can hop on a tube and explore London's many other fantastic nightclubs.
