Kensington Town Hall is located in the heart of the district, next to the Central Library. When it was first built in 1880 it was housed in an austere Italianate-style building designed by architect Robert Walker; costing £54,551 pounds to build. The central library was built next door in the neo-classical style, but residents, who are fiercely protective of the district's historical buildings criticised the move heavily. A renovated Town Hall was supposed to follow suit, however, due to the outcry architect Sir Basil Spence, who built the acclaimed, new Coventry Cathedral in the 1950s, was brought in for the redesign instead.
There was further controversy when the original town hall was torn down to accommodate the new building in 1982. The event received extensive press coverage and was protested by The Victorian Society and the Royal Fine Arts Commission, but eventually went ahead. Residents seem to be at peace with the more contemporary Town Hall, which now stands. The site of the new Town Hall was once home to notable figures such as Stephen Bird, the finest brick maker in Britain and American President Herbert Hoover.
The building is mainly used as the municipal offices of the Parish, but the great and smaller halls within can be used for conferences and events. Events at the hall have included a dollhouse show, toy shows and weddings. Catering and audiovisual equipment are available from the centre if you are looking to hire the space.
The hall is located just a five minute walk away from High Street Kensington tube station, which services the District and Circle lines. From here you have a direct transport link to Paddington Station (where the Heathrow Express train terminates) and Victoria Station (where you can transfer to Gatwick Airport). You also have quick and easy access to other areas of London if you wish to explore further afield. If you are driving to the hall the A315 can be reached from the A4, M4 and M25 and parking facilities are available at the hall, but can be costly, so you may wish to use the Hornton Street National Car Park nearby.
If you need to attend an event or a conference at the Town Hall, there are several reasonably priced hotels located close by. The Copthorne Tara Hotel, about a 5-minute walk away offers comfortable, contemporary rooms at a very reasonable price for those on a budget. The Kensington Close Hotel is another reasonable option, offering guests clean, elegantly decorated rooms; gym facilities and a restaurant in a convenient location about five minutes walk away. Ten minutes from the hall is Kensington House Hotel, with budget conscious prices; clean, modern rooms; and traditional fixtures, which gives the hotel some added character. If you want to splurge on a treat, the more costly Milestone Hotel, ten minutes walk away offers guests stylish, opulent fixtures and a high level of luxury, comfort and service. If large events are occurring at the hall, some hotels offer discounts, so Hotel Assist recommends checking the town hall website before you book, where you can find more information. The Town Hall is also close by to many restaurants, cafes and shops.
