Kilburn is a young and trendy area of North-West London that partly lies in fashionable Camden and partly in Central London’s Westminster. A bustling, multicultural district, Kilburn has a large Irish population as well as a large Afro-Caribbean population. This gives it a rich diversity that can be experienced in the large number of entertainment and music venues, restaurants and pubs in the area.
Kilburn High Road is the main road in Kilburn. It follows the route of a historic Roman road, which in Anglo-Saxon became known as Watling Street - commemorated today in a paving stone on Kilburn High Road. Another paving stone commemorates the former Wells on the corner of Belsize Road and the High Road.
In 1134, a community of nuns founded Kilburn Priory where Kilburn Brook crossed Watling Street. It became a popular resting place for pilgrims heading to shrines at St Albans. The Priory was dissolved Henry VIII and nothing remains of it today, but the priory lands included a mansion and guesthouse that may have become the Red Lion pub, now called The Westbury. The Bell Inn, over the road, opened around 1600 on the site of the old mansion.
Kilburn became fashionable once more in the 18th century when a well of mineral waters was discovered near the Bell Inn. Competing with nearby Hampstead Well, the pub opened gardens and rooms to promote the health-giving properties of the well waters. In the 19th century the wells declined, but Kilburn Wells remained popular as a tea garden.
The area has many good pubs, still known as "watering holes" in London slang, including a great number of superb Irish pubs. Many of these pubs screen Gaelic games on large TVs in the bar. The local newsagents sell Irish newspapers and St Patrick's Day is celebrated in the area in style.
Kilburn High Road, which forms the boundary between Camden to the east and Brent to the west, is nowadays a section of the Edgware Road, which itself is part of the A5 - a major road that runs for 260 miles between London and Wales.
Ian Dury's first band, Kilburn and the High Roads, was named after this road, as is the Flogging Molly song, "Kilburn High Road" and the Shacksong, "Kilburn High Road". This gives an indication of the importance of this area to London’s music scene. Great music venues in the area include Power’s Acoustic Room at Power’s Bar and The Good Ship on Kilburn High Road.
A landmark in Kilburn High Road is the Grade II listed Art Deco Gaumont State Cinema, dating from 1937. These days the building is used as a church rather than an entertainment venue, but it still looks spectacular. The Tricycle Theatre is a renowned arts centre, including a gallery, cinema and theatre in Kilburn. To the south, the Kilburn skyline is dominated by the Gothic spire of St Augustine's church, which has the nickname "the Cathedral of North London". It is well worth a visit. A green space, Kilburn Grange Park, lies to the east of Kilburn High Road.
There are three railway stations on Kilburn High Road. Kilburn tube station (on the Jubilee Line and in Travelcard Zone 2) is at its northern end and a little to the south is Brondesbury station, which is a London Overground station on the North London Line. Further south is Kilburn High Road station, which is also on the London Overground, on the Watford DC Line. Kilburn Park tube station, on the Bakerloo Line, lies a little west of the southern end of the High Road. Queen's Park station, also on the Bakerloo line, is nearby.
Several buses stop on the High Road with routes to Central London and major London railway stations as well as to nearby town centres and places of interest. Kilburn is outside the London Congestion Charge Zone for cars.
A notable hotel in Kilburn is the Black Lion Guesthouse. Set in a stunning Grade II listed period building, this establishment combines a bar, restaurant and exciting venue with an upstairs guesthouse.
