King's College London

King's College London's main campus is housed in an extremely elegant, Grade I listed, Byzantine Gothic building next to Somerset House, overlooking the River Thames; fitting setting for an establishment that has fostered royalty, heads of state and a number of notable luminaries. The University is highly respected, having been ranked 21st in the world and 6th in Europe in the 2010 QS World University Rankings. As such, it has also been ranked the 6th most difficult UK University to gain admission to, by The Sunday Times.

King's College is the third oldest university in England, and was founded in 1829, as a secular establishment, intended to educate the youth of the middle classes, in opposition to the universities of Cambridge and Oxford, which only educated the sons of wealthy Anglicans. A noble precept, however opposition to the university gave rise to a duel between its patron The Duke of Wellington and the 10th Earl of Winchilsea, who disagreed with the University's secular stance. Luckily, neither were harmed during the duel and this rather inauspicious event is still celebrated by students today.

King's College has 9 constituent schools of study, including Arts & Humanities, Biomedical Sciences, the Dental Institute, the Institute of Psychiatry, Law, Medicine, Natural & Mathematical Sciences, Nursing & Midwifery and Social Science & Public Policy. The University also administers the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) and has a unique Department of War Studies, which cannot be found anywhere else in the UK. King's College is also the largest centre for healthcare in Europe, with over 2,000 students in their London School of Medicine, and the King's Drug Control Centre has the dubious honour of hosting official drug tests for the 2012 Olympics.

King's College has campuses throughout London, with their main base along the Strand and further bases at Waterloo, Denmark Hill and Southwark, where you will find Guy's Campus, next to Guy's Hospital. The Strand campus includes a private Roman Bath, which was mentioned by Charles Dickens in David Copperfield and a stunning chapel designed by Sir Gilbert Scott.

Of course, whilst the listed buildings and excellent academic credentials are some of the University's main attractions, there is also a very active Student Union, one of the oldest in London, and plenty for students to see and do nearby. The King's College London Student's Union has over 60 societies and 50 sports clubs, and has been the site of many pranks, including the castration, kidnapping and burial of the King's College mascot, a lion sculpture called 'Reggie'; and allegedly playing football with the head of Jeremy Bentham's auto-icon in a particularly grim escapade. With Somerset House's open-air movie nights and winter ice rinks and plenty of bars, restaurants and galleries in the surrounding area, it really is a great place to study, and stay, with affordable and luxury hotels just down the road. The Strand Palace Hotel offers affordable rates in an elegant old building. The Savoy is a stunning mix of old and modern and has hosted celebrities and royals alike. Kingsway Hall offers 4-star accommodation at the entrance to London's Theatreland and the Best Western Premier, Shaftesbury Piccadilly offers convenient sight seeing and a high level of service and comfort.
