Kings Cross St Pancras tube station is in Zone 1 and can be reached on 6 different lines, the Northern, Circle, Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City, Piccadilly and Victoria lines. First opened in 1863, the tube station is located inside Kings Cross mainline railway station which serves overground trains to the north east of England. St Pancras station next door to Kings Cross now houses the Eurostar terminal where trains depart for destinations in France and Belgium via the Channel Tunnel.
Kings Cross is located on Euston Road in the northern part of central London. The continuation of Euston Road is Pentonville Road which leads to the Angel at Islington. The area is a mixed one and in parts is somewhat run down, reflecting its main use as a transitory arrival and departure point for visitors to the capital.
Notable buildings nearby include The British Library which was housed in a new building in 1997 and is one of the worlds major libraries holding over 150 million books. It also contains some historically famous documents including the Magna Carta and Shakespeare manuscripts (96 Euston Road).
The Scala is a former cinema now used as a nightclub and live music venue (275 Pentonville Road). The Gagosian Gallery has regular exhibitions of art (6-24 Britannia Street), as does Kings Place Gallery (90 York Way). The London Canal Museum charts the history of the many canals in London and is located in a former ice warehouse built for an Italian ice cream maker and also contains exhibitions about ice cream and the ice making industry (12-13 New Wharf Road). Anyone interested in social history would do well to visit The Foundling Museum which documents the Foundling Hospital established in the 18th century to care for abandoned babies (40 Brunswick Square).
Close to the station there are many fast food outlets and pubs, some of which can be on the rougher side. At night the area has a reputation for the seamier aspects of London life with prostitution and drug dealing being commonplace and is consequently not recommended for tourists on a night out. However there are also many offices within the area providing a busy daytime trade and a selection of restaurants including Kings Cross Tandoori (Indian, 341 Gray's Inn Road), Me Kong (Chinese, 124 Kings Cross Road), Mediterraneo Pizzeria (Italian, 112 Kings Cross Road) and Le Bistro De La Gare (French, 184 Pentonville Road).
