The Lancaster Hotel is an elegant 4-star hotel in London's West End, ideally located for London sights and attractions and offering a taste of old-world glamour for the modern business or leisure traveller to enjoy. The Lancaster is part of the Grange group of hotels and is housed in an attractive Georgian building, just minutes from Russell Square and Euston Station.
The Lancaster's guest rooms are well appointed, and tastefully decorated with comfortable furnishings in rich colours. Rooms retain the original period features of the building, with fireplaces and molded cornices adding some charming design flair and all rooms contain a wide range of amenities including, air cooling fans, hypoallergenic bedding, ironing facilities, tea and coffee making facilities, a complimentary newspaper, electronic locking system for extra security, colour TV, direct-dial phone and a hairdryer.
Service at The Lancaster is attentive and the hotel also offers a range of extra facilities to ensure guests have all they need to hand, including a concierge service, 24-hour room service, laundry and dry cleaning and 24-hour reception desk and porterage services, so guest needs can be met around the clock. The hotel also has a cheerful restaurant, where guests can enjoy a continental or full English breakfast (at a surcharge), and a range of international dishes, overlooking The Lancaster's private walled garden, another guest perk to enjoy! If you don't want to pay extra for breakfast, the local area has plenty of intriguing and unique cafes to explore, such as the Mary Ward Centre Vegetarian Cafe and the London Review Cake Shop.
The hotel enjoys a fantastic location in central London, in the safe, elegant Russell Square area. The sprawling campus of University College London lies next door to the hotel, containing several small museums dedicated to the luminaries who studied there including Alexander Fleming, who accidentally discovered penicillin. For a greater insight into world history, The British Museum is just 5 minutes walk from the hotel, and along Euston Road you will find the Wellcome Collection, which has some grim and glorious medical artifacts. Shaftesbury Avenue is a ten minute walk from the hotel for London's Theatreland district and Covent Garden and Oxford Street shopping is within walking distance, where you can watch the street theatre of London's ancient market district, or browse the enormous range of luxury goods at Selfridges Department Store. Culture vultures will also find some food for thought at The British Library, a five-minute walk away and The Horse Hospital Gallery, which offers some aesthetically pleasing modern art.
The hotel enjoys excellent transport links; with Russell Square tube station just a five minute walk away. This station services the Piccadilly line, which runs directly to Heathrow Airport in 30 minutes and to King's Cross St Pancras Station in 5 minutes, where the Eurostar terminus is located, making this extremely convenient for international travellers.
The Lancaster Hotel offers fair prices and comfortable rooms in an excellent London location; however the hotel appears to be slightly behind the times, as it is lacking an internet connection, which is surely a must have for any London hotel. Guests have also found the lack of multi-lingual staff and annoyance and the decor in some rooms a little tired, so it may be best to shop around before you book as the Russell Square area has several reasonably priced and well-appointed alternative hotels. If you do stay at The Lancaster, be sure to choose a room near the back of the hotel to avoid traffic noise from Bedford Place.
