The Lanesborough Hotel is a modern, deluxe five-star hotel located on Hyde Park Corner in London's fashionable Knightsbridge, just opposite Hyde Park Corner. The Lanesborough has been updated in recent years, with achingly stylish fixtures and fittings in rooms, however old-school glamour is still the predominant atmosphere here, with extraordinarily ornate rooms and even a butler service for those who have always wanted to feel like a Lord of the manor.
Rooms at the Lanesborough are available in Executive and Deluxe styles, through to a range of majestic suites. All rooms are decorated differently, from the discrete charm of the Executive rooms, where 19th century furnishings mingle with modern comforts, to the Lanesborough Suite, designed by Alberto Pinto, where chinoiserie and ornate headboards are fused with eclectic patterns and riotous colours. Whatever room you decide on, all will make you feel as though you are a visiting noble person and all come with a fantastic array of amenities, including a Wi-Fi Internet connection and a Sony VAIO laptop, a 24-hour butler service, a change of clothing pressed on arrival, fresh fruits and mineral water, tea and coffee making facilities, personalised stationary and business cards, a large flat-screen TV, iPod docking stations and more still. Everything you need to feel totally pampered and wish that this actually were your home away from home. Your personal butler will also act as your concierge and help you arrange your trip and even unpack your clothes.
The hotel also encompasses a spa and fitness studio, where you can have a relaxing massage, or feel the burn using The Lanesborough's TechnoGym equipment. The Lanesborough also has a range of restaurants, bars and tea rooms, including Apsleys, overseen by wonder chef Heinz beck, where you can dine on Italian and Mediterranean food in baroque style surroundings. Here you can also enjoy a delectable afternoon tea, where you can ask for substitutions for allergy prone guests, and enjoy finger sandwiches, patisserie and of course, a wide range of specialty teas. The Garden Room is now a novelty after smoking was banned inside all public establishments in London, but an allowance has been made here so guests can experience a fine range of cigars and cognacs in sophisticated surroundings, but if you're not especially fond of smelling of smoke, you can adjourn to The library Bar, where the discrete, calm atmosphere makes it the perfect place to knock back a vintage cognac or two.
Once your butler has provided you with an itinerary, all that's left to do is go and explore the city, and there is so much to see nearby that you will be kept very busy. Harrod's Department Store is five-minute walk away for luxury goods or a stop in one of the store's 32 restaurants, and Hyde Park is just across the road, where you can go boating or horse riding in sunny weather. Piccadilly, Mayfair and the West end are just a short taxi journey away, and Green Park and Buckingham Palace are within walking distance. Buckingham Palace is only open for tours of the staterooms two months each year, but at other times you can see the guards in bearskin hats and red uniforms perform the Changing of the Guard ceremony. The Wellington Museum is nearby in celebration of the Duke.
From the hotel you can also easily access South Kensington, for the Victoria & Albert, Science and Natural History museums; the Royal Albert Hall; and further along, Kensington Palace and gardens. The hotel is very well located for transport, especially for international visitors who need to transfer to airports outside of London. The hotel is just two minutes walk from Hyde Park Corner tube station, which services the Piccadilly line, from which you can travel to Heathrow Airport direct in 20 minutes. The hotel is also just 15 minutes walk from Victoria Station, where you can catch the Gatwick Express Train to the airport in about 25 minutes. Both stations also enable you to explore other parts of the city.
Previous guests have raved about The Lanesborough, and it's no surprise as this London institution is still providing excellent service, exquisite food, elegant surroundings and a convenient place to stay for sights and attractions. This costs a little more, but when else can you say you had your own butler? All of the rooms are fabulous, but for the best experience try to get a room with a view of Hyde Park, for magical views across this stunning green space.
