Leicester Square

Leicester Square lies at the heart of central London. It is a very busy pedestrianised area, which is usually filled with groups of tourists or crowds waiting to see stars at Odeon premieres. Situated in between Piccadilly, Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square, all of London's major attractions are walkable and the nightlife of Soho and restaurants in Chinatown are also close by.

Initially established as a fashionable residential district after the Earl of Leicester purchased land in St Martin's Field in the 17th century and built himself a very grand mansion there.  By the 19th century it had become renowned for its entertainment venues, including Wyld's Globe, which contained a scale map of the world, The Alhambra Theatre and the Empire Theatre of Varieties. Although these venues have long since been demolished, modernised or converted, the area retains its legacy as the epicentre of entertainment as London's cinema district and part of London's Theatreland. There is also a small garden in the middle of the square with a statue of Shakespeare at the centre, however it doesn't provide much respite from the surrounding area, as London's pigeons seem to have relocated here from Trafalgar Square.

The area is home to four, huge multiplex cinemas, Vue; Empire; Odeon West End, which is used for smaller West End premieres; and the most famous, Odeon Leicester Square, which hosts large premieres for series such as James Bond and Harry Potter. The Odeon Leicester Square is said to be the largest cinema in the UK with a capacity of 1,600 and holds one of the largest screens in the country. Whilst tickets for larger premieres are as rare as gold dust, it is possible to book tickets for smaller premieres, so you could find yourself sitting behind a celebrity.

The square also houses a variety of chain restaurants including Hagen Daaz, Ben and Jerrys and Garfunkels, so you are better off heading towards Chinatown for a dazzling array of food choices (as long as you like Chinese that is), or elegant, laid back restaurants such as J Sheekey and the St John Hotel Restaurant. Leicester Square is also known for its nightlife as there are many clubs such as Ruby Blue, the 99 Club and Storm Nightclub, not to mention the huge, gay club scene in nearby Soho, however visitors should be sure to take lots of cash as clubs in central London can be pricier and often include a door charge if you can get past the bouncers, who you may have to win over with your charms. Londoners do frequent these clubs, but generally they tend to avoid areas where there are high concentrations of tourists, so you may find yourself surrounded by more fellow tourists.

Due to its central location, Leicester Square hotels can be pricier than most in London, but you couldn't be in a better location for sightseeing, with London's main museums, shopping districts, attractions and landmarks just a short walk away, so it is worth splurging. You will also be very well placed for transport as Leicester Square services the Northern and Piccadilly lines, from which you have direct links to Heathrow Airport, King's Cross St Pancras Station (where the Eurostar terminus is located) and other areas of central London.
