Belgrave Road, in the elegant Pimlico are of Victoria, is strewn with hotels in the elegant Victorian town houses, typical of the area. It's an extremely popular place to stay, and it's easy to see why, with Victoria Station for excellent transport links and some of London's biggest and best sights and attractions all within walkable distance. The Lidos Hotel offers extremely competitive rates for accommodation in such a peaceful, safe and convenient location and has surprisingly tasteful rooms for a budget hotel. Rooms also include a handy range of amenities, such as tea and coffee making facilities, small but modern en-suite bathrooms, hairdryers, a work desk, LCD TV, a telephone and a free Wi-Fi connection, which is a real plus as some of London's 5-star hotels charge for this service. Staff are friendly and a continental breakfast is included in the room rate, however, many guests have said the breakfast is rather underwhelming, so you may be better off sampling the cafes of nearby Belgravia, where you can pick up some divine pastries from Patisserie Valerie.
The hotel doesn't cater for evening meals, but there are plenty of excellent restaurants in the nearby area. From Grumbles cafe, which serves reasonably priced food and is very popular with locals, to UNO for pizza and pasta, to chain restaurants such as Pizza Express and Ask Pasta.
The hotel is in an excellent location form which to explore the city. Theatre buffs will be thrilled with the huge choice of playhouses nearby, from mega musicals at the Apollo Victoria and Victoria Palace Theatres, to cabaret at Pigalle, to more dramatic offerings at the White Bear Theatre. Any art aficionados can visit the Tate Britain in Millbank; just a few minutes walk away, for Turners and Pre-Raphaelite masterpieces, and Late at Tate evening events. The Saatchi Gallery is a 20 minute walk away near Sloane Square, where you will also find the shops of the King's Road, The Chelsea Royal Hospital for the annual Chelsea Flower Show and Harrods, just beyond in Knightsbridge. Buckingham Palace, the Queen's London home is just a 20-minute walk north from the hotel, where you can tour the staterooms for two months each year, when the Queen is at her Balmoral estate, but if the regent is at home, you can watch the daily Changing of the Guards ceremony instead.
The Victoria district also has some of the best transport links in London. From the station, housed in a dramatic Victorian building, you can catch the Gatwick Express train to the airport in 30 minutes as well as overground services to their areas of the UK. The Victoria, District and Circle lines can take you further afield to explore the rest of London and from Victoria coach station you can catch coaches to other areas of the UK and to Europe. The station is also a bus terminus, so there are dozens of bus routes you can take to many other areas of the city. It may take you a few minutes to work out which bus is the correct one, but once you have the hang of the system you'll be away!
