London Bridge tube station

London Bridge is the area surrounding the bridge that joins the City of London to Southwark, two of the oldest and most historic boroughs in London and some of the most picturesque, with plenty of sights and attractions, meaning the area is usually thronging with tourists. A bridge has existed in this location since Roman times and was the only river crossing downstream from Kingston and a very important thoroughfare in the city, until the Putney Bridge opened in 1729. In Mediaeval times, shops and houses could be built on the bridge, which made it incredibly cramped and difficult to cross. This practice was abolished in later years as the buildings made the bridge too heavy.

The bridge gained notoriety in the 16th century, as one of London's grisliest sights, when the southern gatehouse, Stone Gateway was used to display the severed heads of traitors on pikes. The practice has long since been abolished, tourists will be delighted to hear, but you can see a reproduction of the sight in the nearby London Dungeon, London's 'scariest day out'. In more recent years the bridge has been rebuilt and the old bridge sold and rebuilt in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, in a rather curious twist of fate.

London Bridge may be much less showy than Tower bridge, the very grand structure situated along the river, which is often mistakenly called London Bridge, but aside from offering fantastic river views, it is a great place to explore, as both the City of London and Southwark offer a wide range of things to do. From the bridge you can see the Norman Foster Building (or 'The Gherkin' as it has been nicknamed) and Renzo Piano's 'The Shard', as well as some of the more traditional architecture along the river, such as St Paul's Cathedral. Although The City itself is largely a financial district, with a range of upmarket wine bars, pubs and restaurants frequented by be-suited city boys and girls, surrounding the Square Mile, you will find Fabric nightclub one of London's longest running clubs; Smithfield Market, which has been running for a lot longer, since the 10th century, where you can find some of the best steaks in London; and the Barbican Centre, which hosts an exciting programme of cultural events throughout the year, often with acts which have never played the UK before.

Southwark, on the other side of the bridge, is where you will find the most activity, with the delicacies of Borough Market, where London's fledgling bakers, butchers and cheesemakers tout their wares; the cultural cachet of The Globe Theatre, an exact reproduction of the one which existed in Shakespeare's day; the London Dungeon; Southwark Cathedral; The Clink Prison Museum; and a wide range of friendly traditional style pubs along the river, this area is a must see for any first time tourists, although it can get very busy on weekends, so head down early to avoid crowds.

London Bridge tube station, on the south bank of The Thames, services the Northern and Jubilee lines, which offer links to Waterloo for travel to other parts of the UK and King's Cross St Pancras Station, for travel on the Eurostar.  London Bridge overground rail also offers links to other parts of the UK. Hotels in the area can be expensive as it is very popular with visitors and offers great links to the rest of London. However, you can find some cheaper hotels in nearby Kennington and Bermondsey, which both offer unique attractions and are just a few stops away on the tube.
