London City Airport is in London’s Docklands and is the perfect airport of arrival or departure close to the financial districts of London including Canary Wharf and the City of London. The main people who use London City Airport are business travellers, but leisure travellers are increasingly using it due to its close proximity to London and easy transport connections. London City Airport is also the closest private jet centre to Central London.
Opposite the London Regatta Centre, in the London Borough of Newham in East London, it is a single-runway airport and the fifth busiest airport in terms of passengers and aircraft movements serving the London area after Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton.
The airport has stringent rules to limit the noise from aircraft operations. The physical dimensions of the runway - constrained by the water-filled Royal Albert and King George V docks to the north and south - and the steep glideslope limits the types of aircraft that can use London City Airport to mid-range airliners and corporate aircraft.
The airport gets busy during peak hours and operations are restricted to 6.30am to 10pm Monday to Friday, 6.30am to 12.30 on Saturdays and 12.30 to 10pm on Sundays. It is often at its busiest in the winter months, when a number of airlines, most notably British Airways, Swiss International and CityJet, fly winter sports enthusiasts to ski resorts in places such as Zurich, Geneva and Milan.
London City Airport is small compared with London’s other international airports. Inside the terminal there are 22 check-in desks as well as self-service kiosks for Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa, Luxair and Swiss International Air Lines. There are 18 gates at London City Airport. London City Airport has free Wi-Fi for all its passengers. Internet access is available throughout the terminal area and the business centre, which is in City Aviation House. The airport has plenty of places to buy food and drinks.
London City Airport has good transport links with London's new financial district at Canary Wharf, the traditional financial district in the City of London and also to Stratford International station next to the Olympic Park. The Docklands Light Railway, which you can catch at London City Airport, has routes that connect with the London Underground, London Overground and Southeastern Trains. London City Airport DLR station adjoins the terminal building, with enclosed access to and from the elevated platforms. The station is in Travelcard Zone 3.
The airport is served by London Buses services 473 and 474 running to local East London destinations. There is a short-term and a long-term car park, both within walking distance of the terminal, and a taxi rank outside the terminal door. It is outside the London Congestion Charge Zone for cars.
London City Airport is very close to the University of East London Docklands Campus and the ExCel exhibition centre. It is also a short journey away from Stratford, which is the home of the Olympics site and Westfield Stratford City shopping centre and entertainment complex. If you are staying at a hotel near London City Airport and are looking for things to do in the area, other place of interest worth visiting include Canary Wharf with its famous One Canada Square skyscraper, the Museum of London Docklands, Beckton District Park, East Ham Nature Reserve and Visitor Centre, Bow Creek Ecology Park and Newham City Farm.
Reasonably priced hotels within easy reach of London City Airport include Premier Inn London Docklands ExCel, Premier Inn London Beckton, Holiday Inn Express London - Royal Docks and Ibis London Excel Docklands.
