London may be a cosmopolitan city with genteel residential areas, picturesque Victorian architecture and an esteemed royal family, but this wasn't always the case. Murderers, plagues and torture are all part of London's grim past, from the heads impaled on spikes on the old London Bridge, to Jack the Ripper's murderous hold over the Whitechapel Area, and the plague pits which the shiny new city has been built over, London has a dubious history running parallel to its shining achievements and architectural wonders. London Dungeon, a popular, long-running attraction, celebrates the darker side of the city with waxworks, rides and interactive exhibits to terrify and thrill you. It may not be historically accurate, but it's one of the most enjoyable days out in the city, in the most petrifying of ways.
When you exit London Bridge tube station, you won't miss the actors dressed in ghoulish costumes and the mock guillotine show outside the London Dungeon, cajoling you to come and explore, or to ‘Beware!’ depending on how much they ham it up, so the London Dungeon is easy to find. On entering into the dark gloomy space, hidden under part of the bridge, visitors are led by a crypt keeper through 14 macabre chambers, starting in the 13th century Crypt of All Hallows Church, and leading on through the bubonic plague riddled streets of the city, the Great Fire of London, early medical procedures, torture chambers, courtrooms, asylums, Sweeney Todd's barber shop, Queen Mary's murderous reign, Jack the Ripper's Whitechapel and two rides; all of which are brought to life by actors, interactive shows and grisly, yet intriguing set pieces.
The first ride is the Vengeance 5D laser ride, set at number 50 Berkeley Square, allegedly the most haunted house in London, where visitors can take part in a séance and then attack the ghosts that appear with laser guns (much as they did in Victorian times!) and the second is called Extremis: Drop Ride to Doom, which features a 20ft drop.
History buffs and the squeamish, or those with heart conditions may not appreciate the London Dungeon, which involves actors jumping out on visitors, visitors chosen at random to be 'tortured' or 'executed' and shocks and scares throughout, but for fans of haunted houses this is a fast-paced romp through some of London's most horrific events, which are surprisingly good fun when involving laser guns. The attraction isn't free, but will keep any young teens happy and the London Bridge area also has plenty of authentic historic sights for those who want to learn, making it an excellent place to stay during your trip. The Southwark Rose Hotel offers trendy contemporary rooms and fairly reasonable rates. The Novotel London City South offers comfortable accommodation and high-quality service for affordable prices.
