Search for cheap hotels near London Sea Life Aquarium
London may be renowned more for its endless rain than tropical reefs, but this doesn't mean that you can't meet some exotic underwater friends here. On the South Bank of the River Thames, you'll find the London Sea Life Aquarium, which offers a fascinating day out for kids and grown ups alike, with a good dose of education thrown in, so you'll come away filled with strange and incredible facts about amphibious creatures.
The Sea Life Aquarium is larger than you would suspect, when seen from the outside, containing thousands of flippered and finned creatures in over 2 million litres of water. The Aquarium boasts over 500 species from all over the world, 14 themed zones and 65 displays with interactive games and information. Those who were afraid to get back in the water after watching Jaws may not be so thrilled to visit, as the Aquarium has over 40 sharks in their new Shark Reef Experience. Here visitors can cross the Shark walk, a glass walkway mere inches above 16 sharks and then marvel at the pacific display, where you can get up close and personal with these magnificent but toothy creatures. Visitors shouldn’t be afraid though, because, as you'll learn in this exhibit, sharks are greatly misunderstood and are actually less dangerous than coconuts, so you'll come out the other side bite free!
All undersea life is to be found here, from Finding Nemo style clownfish, to surprisingly graceful giant turtles, to giant stingrays, to adorable sea horses and many legged octopi. You can watch as they drift through the centre's giant tanks whilst you learn fascinating facts about them, such as how the sea horse evolved over 40 million years, how an octopus uses interior design and why sea turtles are vegetarians.
The centre also has a range of animals that live above and below the sea, from fearsome crocodiles to adorable penguins. The centre's Gentoo penguins feature in a playful new exhibit and an icy kingdom has been built to contain them, with interactive features such as freezing touch pools and snow vision goggles. The centre also has a programme of shows, talks and events, such as interactive feeding and diving displays, and visitors can learn about the conservation efforts of the centre, where many endangered species are held, which cannot be released back into the wild.
The London Sea Life Aquarium isn't free like many London museums, but the price is reasonable and goes towards helping a good cause. Kids will be kept entertained and you will get to experience one of London's more unique experiences. Choosing to stay in a hotel nearby is a fantastic idea, so you can visit the many South Bank exhibition centres and the London Eye, which are all located nearby. The Novotel London Waterloo is just a few minutes away and offers reasonable rates and comfortable rooms. Days Hotel Waterloo also offers fairly affordable rates and puts you at the centre of the action. The Mad Hatter Hotel is a quirky, low-cost establishment, perfect for those on a budget and The Royal Horseguards offers 5-star opulence and quintessential British style for a luxurious night's sleep.
