Search for cheap hotels near London Wetland Centre
If you think that London's wildlife consists solely of pigeons and varieties of city vermin, you'd be mistaken. London may be a cosmopolitan urban centre, but parts of the city can be surprisingly green, from Hyde Park and Regent's Park, to Hampstead Heath and Primrose Hill all offering an escape from the concrete and crowds. The WWT London Wetland Centre is one of London's most untouched areas of natural beauty, which lies to the west of the city, across the River Thames from Fulham, where you can see many species of bird, mammal and fish in a lush green habitat.
This little slice of the countryside in London is also a conservation site, which was formed out of four disused Victorian reservoirs to create a 100-acre habitat for rare wildlife, which cannot be found anywhere else in London. The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust protects, monitors and restores the Wetlands area to encourage biodiversity, help to prevent floods, provide fuel and reduce carbon emissions. The Trust is also active in educating visitors, as many people don't realise how vital wetland habitats are to helping human life thrive.
When visiting the London Wetland Centre, you can see rare species of birds, with awesomely strange names, such as gadwall and shoveler ducks, great bitterns, pintails, great crested grebes, kingfishers, parakeets and sparrowhawks; as well as beavers, bats, dragonflies, flamingos and ospreys. There is a fascinating Discovery Centre where kids can learn more about the conservation work carried out here and an Adventure Playground, as well as an exciting programme of activities throughout the year, including an Easter Egg Hunt and guided tours.
The Wetlands contain plenty of colourful gardens to stroll through on a summer's day and a Pond Zone, where you can explore the diverse life inside by looking through the Pond Cam, create your own pond life in the digital pond or take part in a staff-led pond dipping session to get up close and personal with frogs, water scorpions and snails.
The London Wetland Centre is a fantastic day out for kids, with just the right balance of education and fun, and adults will enjoy the peaceful flowering open spaces. The centre also contains a shop and cafe, so you won't have to leave to pack a picnic and you can grab a few unique souvenirs. There are few hotels near the Wetlands, but there are plenty of places to stay in Fulham, just across the river. The Millennium Copthorne Hotels at Chelsea Football Club are perfect for any sports fans, but close enough to other attractions and shops for all the family to have an enjoyable trip. The Hotel Ibis offers very reasonable rates and comfortable rooms. The Wyndham Grand Chelsea Harbour offers 5-star contemporary elegance and has a strong green policy, and the Lord Jim Hotel in Earl's Court is a little further away, but offers affordable rates and easy access to the museums of South Kensington.
