Aside from the odd fox tearing your rubbish bags open in the night, or the odd pigeon pestering you for crumbs, London isn't known for its wildlife. Intrepid enthusiasts can travel to the city's more green areas; Richmond Park where you can see deer, the Wetlands with its exotic birds or head to Spitalfields city farm to help feed the cows and alpacas, but for those who don't want to travel far out the city, like their wildlife a little wilder and want the convenience of many genus's under one roof, London Zoo is the only place to go to.

London Zoo, or the Zoological Society of `London, to give it its official name, has the advantage of being located in Regent's Park, a stunning green space in the heart of London, which is surrounded by fascinating areas such as Camden, where you can peruse some of London's most unique shops and Primrose Hill, where you can gaze upon some of London's most exclusive homes, so whilst the zoo may keep you occupied all day, there is plenty nearby to make a day out worth while. The zoo is a huge complex and the oldest scientific zoo in the world, a pioneering institution, it encompasses a huge aviary, an insect house, an aquarium, a reptile house and a children's zoo, some of which had never been used in zoos before. When the zoo was opened in 1828, it was only for the use of members of the zoological society; however, when the animals proved too costly to keep, it was opened to the public and became the major tourist attraction it is today.

Many of the larger zoo animals, such as the elephants and rhinos, have been moved to Whipsnade wild park, after concerns that they didn't have enough space to roam around in; however, there are still many majestic creatures in the compound, including lions and tigers, bears, gorillas and orangutans, giraffes, camels, nocturnal creatures such as armadillos and slow lorises, and the meerkats and otters, which are very popular due to their playful antics and social interaction.

The zoos scientific onus makes it an important ecological centre, with 130 breeding programmes and a large team of volunteers who help to keep track of species outside the zoo as well, such as water voles who live in London waterways. Long gone are the days when children could join in the chimp's tea party or visit the animals behind bars and this enlightened approach to animals in captivity has garnered public support for the centre. So much so that an interactive exhibit was recently installed, where visitors and capuchin monkeys can interact in a specially constructed walkway. Animals and birds are also used in educational talks held in the zoos as well, much to the delight of listeners.

The zoo is a must see for any visiting families as there are many activities for children and an emphasis on education, so any budding biologists will benefit greatly. If you happen to be travelling without children and don't fancy pushing through hordes of excitable youngsters, keep an eye out for a Zoo Lates event, when the park is open after hours and includes a pop up bar, rides, snack stalls and a silent disco. Admittedly, many of the animals are asleep during this time, but drinking a beer in the nocturnal house and watching the otters frisk about in the dark is an experience not to be missed. The nearest station to the zoo is Regent's Park, however, you can easily walk to the zoo from Camden if you want to indulge in some retail therapy first.
