The Macdonald Hotel sits in the heart of London's King's Cross district, around leafy Argyle Square. The hotel offers affordable accommodation in this vibrant and bohemian area of the city, just a few minutes from King's Cross St Pancras Station. Housed in one of the many attractive Georgian buildings in the area, the hotel offers very affordable rates to suit business and leisure travellers who want to have easy access to the rest of London. The King's Cross area has become much more gentrified in recent years with the arrival of the Eurostar terminus, making it a fascinating place to stay.
The Macdonald Hotel's rooms are provide basic furnishings and amenities, decorated in a basic yet comfortable style, perfect for storing your bag and hitting the town. Rooms are available from Single to Family sizes and en-suite facilities are available at an extra charge, otherwise shared bathroom facilities are provided. In-room amenities include a free Wi-Fi connection, tea and coffee making facilities, a colour TV and central heating, plus fax services if needed. Rooms are petite as this is a London town house conversion, but very clean and staff are friendly and helpful. A complimentary Full English breakfast is also offered in the room rate, which is reportedly satisfying, but there are plenty of cafes nearby if you get bored of the selection. Prêt A Manger, McDonalds and Starbucks are all just a 5-minute walk away. The hotel doesn't cater for evening dining, but due to the increase in European 'gourmands' since the Eurostar arrived, an impressive selection of restaurants have sprung up in King's Cross, such as Megaro and 06 St Chad's Place, but if these are out of your budget chains such as Pizza Express and Carluccio's offer reasonable alternatives.
The hotel is very well placed for sight seeing in London. With The British Library, The British Museum and the Wellcome Collection all within a ten-minute walk. Oxford Street shopping and Tottenham Court Road theatres are just a 20-minute walk (or a short tube/bus ride) away and more eclectic shopping can be found in Camden, just a 15-minute walk north of the hotel and in Angel, at the top of Pentonville Road, where you can find vintage markets and quirky independent stores. Regent's Park and London Zoo are just a ten-minute walk away and the hotel is in a superb location for those who want to enjoy London's nightlife. In King's Cross, The Scala, The Lexington and Mondo Water Rats provide live music and Camden is filled with venues such as The Barfly and The Roundhouse, playing everything from blues to death metal.
This hotel is an excellent choice for international visitors, as those embarking from the Eurostar only have to walk a few steps to the door. From King's Cross St Pancras, you also have a direct link to Heathrow Airport via the Piccadilly Line, and you can reach many other areas of the UK via the overground trains. King's Cross also services 6 tube lines, so you can reach almost any part of the city from there.
Low-cost hotels in London vary in quality, but the Macdonald Hotel seems to be one of the better appointed hotels in the area, as it is welcoming, well maintained and is very convenient for travelling to central London sights. It is an excellent choice for those who are on a budget, but if you do stay here, be sure to choose a room on the upper floors, which tend to be brighter and airier, although don't bring too much luggage as there is no lift.
