"Hotels in Maida Vale"
Maida Vale in northwest London enjoys a much more affluent reputation than Paddington situated just below the area. It may share the same elegant Victorian and Georgian town houses, but as a quieter and more residential district with picturesque surrounds, it has attracted a wealthy artistic set and houses many celebrities including Jarvis Cocker of the band Pulp, Bjork, Sir Alec Guinness, Paul Weller, Kate Moss, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Jennifer Saunders. The area is quiet and picturesque with a low-key chic vibe and plenty of trendy gastropubs, eateries and shops.
Alfie's Antique Market is a fantastic, four-storey emporium with a delightful rooftop restaurant, where you can pick up some stunning antique furniture from various decades. The Winery is a very unique wine shop housed in a former Victorian pharmacy, where you can find some unusual styles and vintages amongst the dusty bottles. The Porchester Spa is a very relaxing place to take a quick time out in between sight seeing and shopping, which is very close to the area, and Whiteley's shopping complex, which contains a huge range of high-street and designer brands, as well as a cinema, is just a 15 minute walk from the area.
Maida Vale's restaurants cater for a wealthy clientele without appearing too stuffy, with comfortable, eclectic interiors; satisfying gastropub food and a friendly atmosphere, you will find something tasty to enjoy. The Warrington is a take on a gastropub, with very high quality food and a great selection of locally brewed drinks. Idlewild is a more glamorous establishment, which has an extensive cocktail menu and a decadent menu in laid-back surroundings and The Windsor Castle is a popular pub, where you can immerse yourself amongst British kitsch and prop up the bar where many English icons, such as Bobby Moore, have ordered a pint.
Maida Vale is a great area to see some of London's smaller galleries. There are a few quirky ones located nearby such as Subway Gallery, which is submerged below Edgware Road tube station; Mark Jason Gallery, which showcases fantastic contemporary art; the Yaa Asantewaa Arts and Community Centre, which focuses on African arts; and Lisson Gallery, which exhibits up and coming and established artists. There are also some of London's more unusual activities just a short walk away such as Jason's canal boat tours of London; City Secrets Walks, which show you the hidden corners of London; and The Puppet Theatre Barge, which is a great activity for families, featuring lively Punch and Judy shows on a boat; even Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt took their family when they visited London.
Located just outside of the centre of London, Maida Vale isn't within walking distance of the main attractions, so if you don't want to be jumping on and off a tube throughout your stay, you may wish to be closer to the centre, however, it is a pretty and peaceful place to stay in and there is a definite chance for celeb spotting in the local pubs. Situated on the Bakerloo line, you can easily reach Paddington Station, where you can catch the Heathrow Express, so you are well placed to reach major transport hubs, and you can be in central London in about 20 minutes. Hotels in the Maida Vale area may be pricier, if very chic, so the best option might be to stay in nearby Paddington or Bayswater, which are packed with low-cost hotels. These do vary in quality, but they offer very reasonable rates in a great location, and Maida Vale is just a short tube ride away.
