The Planetarium on Marylebone Road and Madame Tussauds. Baker Street station is right next door

Marylebone is located in the City of Westminster in west London. It is an attractive, affluent district, which is largely residential, but enjoys a location close to major sights, attractions and shopping areas in London. Located in between Edgware, Regent's Park, Bloomsbury, Paddington, Mayfair, Euston and Hyde Park, you will find many fantastic London districts just a short walk away from the area.

Named after the Church of St Mary's, which was built on the now paved over River Tyburn, Marylebone encompasses Baker Street, the home of London's most famous fictional detective, whom many tourists believe to be real, which is unsurprising considering how much Sherlock Holmes is honoured in the area, with a museum in his name and even his deerstalker-clad visage embedded in the tube station tiles. Here you will also find Madame Tussaud's waxwork museum, which has surreal cocktail party's worth of celebrities, singers, politicians, personalities, historical figures and of course, the ghouls and ghosts of the Chamber of Horrors, all rendered lovingly in wax. If that is a little too 'uncanny valley' for your liking, The Planetarium is just next door, with its 360 degree 'star-dome', upon which you can see the galaxy spread out before you. Whilst both museums are fascinating, tourists should prepare for long queues to get in.

If the weather is nice, Marylebone is just a short stroll away from both Regent's and Hyde parks, where you can enjoy open-air concerts, visit London Zoo or The Serpentine Gallery, go boating on the Serpentine Lake or air your grievances at Speaker's Corner, or you can simply enjoy a picnic in London's lush green spaces, perhaps with a few luxurious snacks from Selfridges food hall, which is just down the road, situated on London's main shopping artery, Oxford Street, which has over 300 shops spread over one and a half miles. Oxford Street has something for everyone, from designer couturiers on Bond Street to cheap and cheerful fashion in Primark and H&M. At the end of Oxford Street you will find the Marble Arch monument, which was once used as Britain's tiniest police station. Shopping enthusiasts will also want to head to Carnaby Street, which borders Marylebone. Carnaby was the centre of Mod fashion in the 60s, with shops such as Mary Quant and Take 6, and today it no longer has so many unique shops, but it still has a good range of high street and designer shops and some traditional pubs nearby.

Marylebone High Street is also worth visiting for cute boutiques such as Diptyque, for designer candles and Apartment C for something saucy! Alfie's Antique Market is also located nearby, where you can pick up quirky vintage finds in shops such as The Girl Can't Help It. There are also some very fine eateries along the high street, such as Providores and Tapa Room, Orrery and Woodlands vegetarian restaurant. There are also chains such as Zizzi's, Wagamamas and Starbucks cafe for those who are sticking to a budget.

Marylebone enjoys good rail links, with Marylebone tube station, which services the Bakerloo line, which will take you to central London in ten minutes or to Paddington Station, where you can catch the Heathrow Express Train. Hotels in the area vary greatly in price and quality; towards the centre of London they tend to be of a higher quality but more expensive, whereas ones towards Paddington and Edgware Road can be a mixed bag. It is best to shop around as the area is teeming with hotels and many offer very affordable rates with stylish rooms.
