The Mentone Hotel is a family run establishment in the refined and picturesque Bloomsbury district of London, an area as renowned for its literary connections, with Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster as past residents, as it is for its academic centres, with the University of London and University College London campuses both situated minutes from the hotel. The Mentone offers reasonable rates for travellers on a budget and a location, which is convenient for sight seeing, shopping and nightlife, all the best London has to offer.
Rooms at the Mentone are available from Single to Quad sizes, catering for solo, family and group visitors alike. Rooms are simple with a vague 'dorm-room' feel about them, but are decorated in a tasteful traditional style, with chintz fabrics, antique-style furnishings and art prints on the walls. All rooms come with a handy range of amenities, including a free wireless Internet connection (a real bonus as many 4 and 5 star establishments charge for this service), tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryers if needed, ironing facilities and a colour, flat-screen TV.
The hotel also offers a range of extra facilities such as luggage storage, an airport pick up service and discounted parking in the surrounding area and staff are very friendly and available from 7:30am to 11:30pm each day. The room rate includes a continental breakfast buffet with cooked, full English breakfast options. The breakfast is reportedly satisfactory, but there are plenty of cafes and bakeries nearby if you fancy something a little more exciting, including Giraffe for healthy brunch options and Crussh for juices and snacks. There are some delectable restaurants nearby as well, including chains such as Strada and Carluccio's and Snazz Sichuan for something a little more exotic.
The hotel is in a fabulous location, with austere and intriguing museums such as The British Museum, Charles Dickens Museum and Wellcome Collection all within walking distance, and a range of quirky galleries including The Crypt, which offers a unique yet slightly morbid take on art and The Horse Hospital, which was, unsurprisingly, a hospital for horses previously. From the hotel Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road shops are just a 10-minute walk away, which will delight any shopping enthusiast, and Covent Garden shops are just a fifteen minute walk away, with plenty of theatres, street performers and quirky bars as well. Soho's nightlife and Leicester Square's cinemas, Chinatown's restaurants and Regent's Park, home to London Zoo are all just a short walk away, making this a very good choice for those who want to see the best London has to offer for less.
The hotel has excellent transport links as well, with Euston Station just a five-minute walk away, for over ground services to other parts of the UK and the Northern and Victoria lines, providing a direct link to Victoria Station for the Gatwick Express Train and other parts of the city. King's Cross St Pancras Station is also just a ten-minute walk away, where the Eurostar terminal is located and visitors can travel direct to Heathrow Airport via the Piccadilly line in 30 minutes.
The Mentone Hotel may offer basic accommodation and amenities, but it is a pleasant and friendly place to stay, and the perfect choice for those who have to stick to a budget in this expensive city. If staying here, rooms at the back offer more peace and quiet and it is advised to request a fan if you are visiting the UK in the summer, as one isn't included in the room.
