Search for cheap hotels near Millbank
Millbank is located along the bank of the River Thames, which has proved to be both fortuitous for the area, offering fantastic views and a prime location in London, and not so lucky, as Millbank was extensively damaged in the 1928 Thames flood disaster, when freak weather and an extra tropical cyclone in the North Sea caused waters to surge over the Thames embankment and the Chelsea embankment, which collapsed. In the disaster, 14 drowned and many lost their homes, but Millbank was rebuilt and today is home to many rather elegant, red brick town houses, distinct from the Victorian architecture of much of central and west London. Pimlico and Westminster border the area and it is close to many London attractions, as well as housing the Tate Britain, one of Britain's most beloved galleries.
Although it may have been superceded in recent years by its flashier new counterpart, the Tate Modern on the South Bank of the Thames, Tate Britain is the oldest of the Tate Galleries, established in 1897 and its long standing reputation, stunning architecture and fascinating collection mean it still draws huge crowds. It has an extensive collection of J. M. W. Turner paintings; a fantastic programme of exhibitions throughout the year, encompassing classic and modern art; and Tate Britain holds fabulous 'Late at Tate' events, where you can listen to live music and peruse the art with a glass of wine.
In Millbank, you will also find The Chelsea College of Art and Design, where students hold exhibitions, so you could pick up an investment piece before the artists hit the big time. The former Royal Army Medical College was also situated here in the 19th century, where the vaccine for typhoid was first developed and MI5 and Millbank Tower, home to the Conservative Party are also located here. Millbank is just a short walk from the stunning neo-Byzantine building of Westminster Cathedral, the exhibition centres of the South Bank and Victoria's theatres as well as the station, where you can catch the Express Train to Gatwick.
Millbank is a more peaceful, laid back area than central London, but it is in a very picturesque setting and has several quaint pubs with river views, so it is a great place to take a leisurely stroll on a sunny day. There are also several restaurants with views over the river and chic eateries in nearby Westminster, so you can stop for a delightful bite.
Millbank's nearest tube station is Pimlico, where you can catch a tube to Victoria Station if you don't fancy walking, and you can easily reach central London on the Victoria Line. Hotels in the area tend to be cheaper than they are closer to the centre of London, but you may find the cheapest hotels are near Victoria or south of the river, although if you do stay in Millbank, you will find it quiet and safe, the perfect place for a good night's sleep in a very busy city.
