Most visitors to London think of Christopher Wren as the man who designed St Paul's Cathedral, and nothing more, but the great architect had a great deal more under his belt. A renaissance man with an interest in mathematics, astronomy, Aristotelian physics and geometry as well as architecture, Wren was prolific in rebuilding London's churches after the Great Fire in 1666, with an astounding 51 structures to his name, scattered around the city. You would think that building 51 churches would keep anyone busy, but Wren somehow managed to find the time to also build a rather spectacular monument to commemorate the victims of the Great Fire and celebrate the restoration of the city. The monument takes the form of a Doric column, 61 metres high, topped with a drum and copper urn, from which flames emerged as a sign of remembrance. Although some of Wren's prolific output has since been demolished, the monument still stands in the city and visitors can walk up the 311 stone steps to the viewing platform, to get great views of the surrounding area and Wren's other masterpiece, St Paul's Cathedral and other London landmarks such as the BT Tower and Tower Bridge. The climb isn't for the faint hearted, or those with mobility difficulties, but if you do make it to the top and back again you get a certificate of completion to prove it.

The Great Fire of London was one of the darkest periods in London history. Starting in a baker's shop in Pudding Lane, the fire spread quickly, due to the use of timber for many houses and shops. Remarkably, few lives were lost, but the city came to a standstill as businesses were forced to close and people were left homeless. However, in the long term, the fire changed the face of the city and made it the great capital it is today. Buildings were resurrected in stone and London emerged bigger and brighter than before, so the monument is a fitting testament to this regeneration. The monument itself has withstood two World Wars since and has also been a notorious spot for suicides after six successful attempts, so from 1842 the viewing gallery has been caged. The Monument also received a visit from a sailor who believed he could fly from the top, a daring, if insane plan, but the man managed it and said he would do it again if offered money.

It's possible that the man was in one of the many friendly pubs nearby before competing the stunt and even visitors not contemplating flying off the top should take a look around the surrounding area. Aside from wonderful drinking establishments such as The Garrison Public House and The Anchor Tap, there is a lot to see and do nearby. Shunt vaults showcase weird and wonderful, avant-garde theatre events and Proud Cabaret offers a raucous, speakeasy style event. You can also see the more modern Lloyd's of London building and Southwark Playhouse just a short walk away to take in a show, and if you have any energy after clambering up The Monument's steps, you can visit Drum Cafe, where punters all take turns to beat an enormous African drum, a cathartic activity after a hard day's sight seeing.

Monument Tube Station services the District and Circle lines, from which you can reach Victoria for the Gatwick Express Train, or King's Cross St Pancras station, where you can catch the Eurostar. There are some very trendy hotels in the surrounding area, but due to the many sights nearby, these are usually pricey, so a better choice is to stay further east around Aldgate or stay just south of the River near Waterloo.
