Moorgate is an important street in the City of London that runs north from the Bank of England. The name comes from a historic entrance to the City in the London Wall that was originally built by the Romans. Although the gate itself no longer exists, the thoroughfare named after it still crosses the road named after London Wall at a vital intersection in the City. It leads to North East London in one direction and down towards London Bridge to the south.
The Moorgate area is the home of many prestigious companies, valued institutions and commercial developments including the office building Moor House, a campus of the London Metropolitan University and part of the London Guildhall University. In a side street close to Moorgate lies the Chartered Accountants' Hall, home of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
The Guildhall is connected to Moorgate station via Bassishaw Highwalk. The Guildhall is the home of the City of London Corporation and the centre of City government since the Middle Ages. Adjacent to the Guildhall is the Guildhall Art Gallery, which houses the City of London’s art collection. Finsbury Circus, an oval-shaped circus enclosing gardens, is just to the east of Moorgate. This is the home of the City of London Bowls Club and has a perfectly manicured lawn. There are benches around the edge of the gardens that are a pleasant place to sit and enjoy a tranquil moment away from the hubbub of the City.
Among the famous people associated with Moorgate is Romantic poet John Keats. He was born in 1795 in the Swan and Hoop Inn, a pub that is now called The John Keats at Moorgate. There are plenty of other fine traditional pubs on Moorgate, and the street also has a very good selection of restaurants, cafes and shops.
Moorgate is surrounded by famous London landmarks within 10-minutes walking distance, including the Lloyd’s building, the Gherkin (30 St Mary Axe), The London Stock Exchange and St Paul's Cathedral. The Museum of London and The Barbican exhibition, concert and performance venue are also just a short walk from Moorgate. Petticoat Lane market, famous for stalls selling fashion and clothing, lies a 15-minute walk to the east, on Middlesex Street.
The whole area is steeped in history and it is easy to explore the entire City of London on foot or by public transport from a central base in Moorgate. One nearby places of interest worth visiting is Bunhill Fields, which is a park on the site of London’s oldest burial ground. It contains the graves of John Bunyan, author of The Pilgrim’s Progress, and the poet William Blake.
