The Knightsbridge district of London is famed for its attractive Victorian architecture, its exquisite shops, including Harrods and Harvey Nichols Department Stores and its very affluent residents. It's true that the area is one of the most expensive to stay in during your visit to London, but if you wish to mingle with the elite, well heeled locals and experience the luxurious side of the city, it's the perfect place to be. No 11 Hotel in Knightsbridge is also a members club, so you will feel like a VIP from the moment you step into the elegant red-brick building.
Recently restored and given a more contemporary vibe by owner Paul Davies, the hotel is elegant and refined, but without an air of stuffiness. Brocade upholstery and murano glass chandeliers are in bright colour schemes and offer a discrete hideaway from the busting streets nearby. The hotel's 58 rooms are superbly appointed with antique style furnishings and claw foot baths and offer a wide array of amenities, including plasma-screen TVs with movies and games, a free Wi-Fi connection, complimentary Molton Brown toiletries, ironing facilities, a hostess tray with tea and coffee and much more. The hotel also offers a range of apartments in nearby Mews houses for those who want a little extra privacy.
The hotel has a fantastic range of facilities, including a well-connected concierge service, a high-performance gym, a relaxing spa with personally tailored treatments, a chauffeur service with Rolls Royce and Bentley cars and a restaurant and bar, which serves a tempting menu filled with fresh seasonal dishes with a duly considered wine list. A quintessentially British afternoon tea is also served in the dining room for a relaxing afternoon after hitting the shops.
The hotel is in a stunning location, seconds away from Sloane Square and Belgravia. With Knightsbridge shops, the King's Road's designer and high-street boutiques and the elegant stores of Belgravia nearby your credit card might feel the strain, but at least you won't have to walk far to store your purchases in your room. You are also just a ten minute walk to London's museum district, where you will find the Victoria & Albert museum, which is filled with a huge selection of arts and crafts from around the world; the Science Museum, where you can paint pictures with gas bubbles or see a capsule that has orbited the earth; and the Natural History Museum, with its stunning 'cathedral of nature' architecture and it's full scale diplodocus skeleton in the entrance hall. If you want to experience some of London's cultural delights, you can enjoy music of all styles at the Royal Albert Hall; muse over modern art at The Serpentine and Saatchi galleries, catch a tube to London's Theatreland district; or see some historic architecture at Kensington Palace, about 15 minutes walk away, where Princess Diana lived before her death. Hyde Park and Kensington gardens also provide a host of outdoor activities if you arrive during the summer months.
No 11 Hotel is also just a seven-minute walk to Knightsbridge tube station, a fantastic location for exploring the rest of the city and reaching major transport hubs. The tube station services the Piccadilly line, from which you can reach Heathrow Airport direct, in about 20 minutes and King' Cross St Pancras Station, where the Eurostar terminus is located.
No 11's convenient location and long-standing reputation make it a good choice for those who want a chic hideaway with old-school charm, however it seems that the recent makeover hasn't gone down well with some previous clientele, with some saying the new rooms look like bordellos and it may be best to shop around first to make sure you are getting the best value for your money. The hotel is clearly trying to attract a younger, more discerning clientele, but a few adjustments are needed with service and some teething problems are still evident; however, for location and for a home from home ambience (if your home is that of an eccentric country gentleman), you may find this just to your liking.
