Search for cheap hotels near O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire
In the Edwardian era, Londoners were rather fond of the theatre and dozens of ornate venues were built throughout the city to provide a refined evening out for all classes of citizenry. Many of these still exist, especially in the West End, but some have been used for a more contemporary purpose, and looking at the leather corsets, spike studded bracelets and cartoonish platform boots patrons are wearing for the latest gig at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire today, it seems hard to believe that this venue was once the picture of gentility and culture.
"Charlie Chaplin once performed here"
The former theatre has had luminaries such as Charlie Chaplin and, erm, a bucking mule named Sloper gracing its boards in the heady days of music hall comedy, but when it was destroyed in the war, it was then rebuilt as a BBC recording studio. This was where popular programmes such as Crackerjack, The Old Grey Whistle Test, Hancock's Half Hour and Jim'll Fix It were filmed in front of a studio audience and legendary performers such as Spike Milligan, Cliff Richard, Cilla Black and Dusty Springfield started their careers in London; however, the Empire only became an official live music venue in 1994 when it was revamped for a new generation, making it the youngest of London’s large music venues.
"Controversial Dixie Chick's gig"
The venue mostly caters for an alternative crowd, with goth and metal bands such as The damned, Opeth, The Mission and Wretch 32 playing gigs there, but in recent years, the venue has broadened its range of acts to cater to a more diverse fan base, with gigs by indie artist Andrew Bird, world artist Tinawiren and pop artist Jose Gonzalez. One would think that these shows would be a calmer affair than the rock and goth gigs, but there was great controversy during The Dixie Chick's gig at the Empire, after they chose this venue to voice their infamous opinion on President George Bush Junior.
"Decadent, loud music"
The venue suits decadent, loud music, as it has retained many of its original features, such as the carved detailing around the stage and opera boxes, from which you can get a great vantage point. The venue also has a bar area where you can listen in a more relaxed casual manner, and a capacity of 2,000, so a night out here is often fairly raucous with mosh pits and dancing. The venue has been voted 'Best Music Venue' 5 times at the Music Week Awards, so it's definitely worth a visit during your stay. Shepherd's Bush is also a great area to explore, with plenty of unique restaurants and shops and a fascinating market where you can sample exotic foods. Earl's Court and Olympia Exhibition Centres are both close by, and you can tour the BBC Television Studios as well. Dalmacia Hotel is a low-cost hotel with a homely feel. The Notting Hill Hotel is just a short bus ride from the Empire and offers basic but comfortable rooms.
