Old Compton Street, Soho
From a seedy district of central London, Soho has, of late, become a trendy nightlife area.
It is situated between Shaftesbury Avenue in the south and Oxford Street in the north and is centred on Soho Square.
Old Compton Street runs east to west from Wardour Street to Charing Cross Road.
It's a melting pot of adult shops, bars, shops and restaurants.
It's also a centre of nightlife for the gay community with many dedicated bars. Visitors either vacate the area quickly or hang around bemused but don't be out off by appearances, its a well policed area with very little trouble until after midnight when it can get rowdy. Notable trendy gay venues include G-A-Y and Ku.
The area around Old Compton Street is steeped in history.
Frith Street was at one time the haunt of Constable and Mozart, this is also the location of Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. Dylan Thomas held monumental drinking sessions in the French House (was the York Minster) on Dean Street.
The Prince Edward Theatre can be found on Old Compton Street opposite a collection of good bars and restaurants.
