Hotels near to Olympia Exhibition Centre
Olympia is a sister venue to Earls Court exhibition centre. It is one of two large venue sites, which host trade shows, theatrical performances, sporting events, concerts, parties, awards ceremonies and conferences; therefore making the area an important trading and cultural hub.
The centre opened in 1886 and the first exhibition was the Hippodrome Circus, which featured 400 performers, 300 horses and six elephants. Olympia has a rather scandalous history; when first built, the centre contained a suite called the 'Prince's Apartments' for regent Edward VII, where he would allegedly carry out extra-marital affairs. In World War I, the centre was also used as a prison camp for German and other hostile nationals. Since then it has been developed into the stunning venue it is today.
Recent exhibitions at Olympia include the famed Horse of the Year show, featuring the finals of the most prestigious National show jumping championships; the Erotica show; the venues sauciest event; The Doctor Who Experience, based on the popular British sci-fi show; Musicmania, where avid fans can add to their memorabilia collections; The Toy Fair, a trade show dedicated to childish fun; and The Adventure Travel Show, where thrill seekers can find their next expedition. Due to the size of the venue, the shows are spectacular and elaborate productions. Visitors can often find useful information, discounts and free giveaways at the trade fairs.
Olympia is very well placed for cheap accommodation, the Holland Inn Hotel, just a five minute walk away, offers very reasonable rates for comfortable beds in an elegant Edwardian townhouse. Russell Court Hotel is also a five-minute walk away and is only marginally more expensive than the Holland Inn Hotel, but still a very affordable rate for budget conscious travellers who want contemporary, stylish rooms. The Hand & Flower, which is very close to the centre, offers cheap and cosy rooms with modern fittings in a traditional English gastropub; offering a great selection of food and drink. For a sleek, modern room, Simply Suites, a ten-minute walk away, is a boutique hotel, which won't stretch your budget too far.
The exhibition centre has restaurants to cater for all tastes, including British cuisine in the bright and cheerful Jam Tree restaurant; tapas in the L Restaurant and Bar; or snacks and sandwiches in The Glass House. There is a wide selection of eateries near to the arena as well, where you may find prices are cheaper. The Albion serves traditional British food and Balans Kensington offers a sophisticated European menu.
The exhibition centre is situated next to Kensington Olympia tube station, which services the District line. Travellers should be aware that the station is on its own branch of the line, so it can be tricky to get to and there can be a longer waiting time for the tube to arrive. The station is one stop from Earls Court tube station, which services the District and Piccadilly Lines. The station provides a direct link to Victoria Station (where you can transfer to Gatwick Airport) and Paddington Station (where the Heathrow Express train terminates). If you are driving to the venue you can reach it from the M1, A1, M11 and A10 via the A406 to the A4 road, then following signs on Cromwell Road. Parking is available, but as there are thousands of visitors every year, it is strongly advisable to book a space when you book your ticket to avoid disappointment.
Ticket prices vary depending on the show so check the website for information. Hotel Assist advises visitors to purchase tickets as a member of the venue as you will get a better deal, and if you want to do some celebrity spotting, treat yourself to a glass of bubbly at the centre's champagne bar.
