Opera is often seen as a rather upper crust affair, where black tie is required along with some kind of monocle and a detailed knowledge of the Italian language, but Opera Holland Park is on a mission to end the elitism surrounding opera, to bring it to the masses and show London just how skilled and beautiful an art form it can be. As the company's name might suggest, their operas are performed in the attractive, green Holland Park every summer and attract a mixed crowd, becoming more popular every year.
The performances can seat up to 1,000 people and if you're concerned about London's rainy skies, you shouldn’t worry. The seating is covered by a large canopy, which contains picnic tables and terraces, so you can pack some goodies and turn a trip to the opera into a full day out. You still get the benefit of a day at the park, but you don't have to listen to the players warble whilst getting drenched.
The performances aren't free, but tickets still cost much less than an opera performance usually commands and 1,200 tickets are offered free to under 18 year olds throughout the run of performances, with over 80s benefiting from reduced prices. Those who are concerned about the language barrier, may be dubious when they see the line up of operas such as Falstaff by Verdi, Cosi Fan Tutte by Mozart and Yevgeny Onegin by Tchaikovsky, but you are in safe hands with these masters of music and the company are very skilled. Using a fantastic range of costumes, props and of course, divine singing voices, the performers manage to convey the story clearly, whilst not losing any of the opera’s credibility.
Opera Holland Park also run a series of events called Words in the Park, with notable speakers such as model turned chef Sophie Dahl, comediennes Sandi Toksvig and Maureen Lipmann and writers such as AS Byatt and Jung Chang. This is a fascinating series, which will educate and entertain, much like the operas!
Holland Park is a very picturesque area of London, and very close by you will find the bohemian enclave of Notting Hill, which is filled with exquisite restaurants, bars and cafes. Here you will also find Portobello Antiques Market and the Notting Hill Carnival. The area is also close to central London and from Notting Hill Gate tube station you can easily explore the rest of the city. Hotels in the area cater for all budgets and tastes, such as the Notting Hill Hotel, a 2-star establishment with very reasonable room rates. The Abbey Court Hotel offers rooms which will please any Downton Abbey fans, with ruffles, lace and four-poster beds, this is a haven of old-world style. For something a bit more up to date, the Shaftesbury Premier London, Notting Hill offers contemporary rooms and funky decor in public areas, and Grand Plaza Serviced Apartments offer well-appointed, self-catering units for a home away from home experience.
