Piccadilly Circus

Sometimes thought of as the capitals answer to a question Times Square wasnt really asking, Piccadilly Circus, London is another busy road junction, dominated with spectacular neon signage. It remains a major junction on the way into the West End, and has much famous statuary of its own. It is one of Londons most easily recognised locations and a firm favourite with tourists.

Piccadilly Circus is easiest to get to from Piccadilly Circus tube, unsurprisingly, and this tube station gives a number of exits, depending on which part of the junction you want to end up at. As the Circus is really just a junction of roads, you should know which part you want to be on. If you want to get up close to Eros, then you need to take the appropriate exit. Piccadilly Circus is also within easy walking distance of Charing Cross, Leicester Square and Oxford Circus tube stations. Many buses stop at Piccadilly Circus, or you could take a nice walk up from Green Park along Piccadilly seeing the famous shops as you go.

Piccadilly Circus was originally a circular road junction, hence its name, but it lost this shape when Shaftesbury Avenue was built in 1886. The name, however, remains. Piccadilly was named after Pickadilly Hall, the home of a famous seventeenth-century tailor, who had a wide selection of piccadills or collars. There have been many suggestions over the years about how to increase traffic flow around the site, including proposals for a double-decker Piccadilly Circus with the traffic underground, and for massive redevelopments. None of these have been acted on, and Piccadilly Circus remains much the same as it did in the late nineteenth century.

The Shaftesbury Monument Memorial Fountain with its famous statue of Eros was erected in 1893 to commemorate the works of the great Victorian philanthropist, Lord Shaftesbury. Although it is commonly referred to as Eros, the statue was originally intended to depict Anteros, his twin brother, the God of Selfless Love, to tie in with the idea of Shaftesbury the philanthropist. Many assume, however, that it is Eros, the God of Erotic Love, quite a different thing.

The illuminations that tower over the junction have been famous for began with illuminated advertising hoardings in the early 1900s. The building that is most famous for them is usually referred to as Monico after the Cafe Monico which used to stand there. Coca-Cola has had an advertisement there since 1955, but the oldest sign is Sanyo installed in 1987. Over the last decade all of the neon lights have been replaced with digital LEDs, but the advertisements remain as spectacular as ever.

Piccadilly Circus is a must-see on any trip to the capital, and it gives you easy access to The Trocadero, Leicester Square, Shaftesbury Avenue and Theatreland, and Soho (the infamous Windmill is only a couple of minutes walk away). It is well worth a visit for anyone looking to experience the sights and sounds and classic attractions of London. It will remain a tourist favourite for many years to come.
