Between Trafalgar Square and the river Thames, the Playhouse Theatre, London offers a varied and wide programme of musicals, revivals, classical theatre and new work. It has had a n interesting history, serving for some time, as a BBC radio studio, it is now a stalwart of the West End, and can usually b relied upon to offer up something interesting for the theatre-going audience.

The theatre was built as the Royal Avenue Theatre when it opened in 1882. Its early history was filled with productions of comic operas, burlesques, and farces. The music hall star and low comedian Arthur Roberts was a common sight at the Royal Avenue Theatre at this time. Within a decade it was offering more straight theatre, serious drama, and it was here, as a favour to a friend, that George Bernard Shaw premiered his first West End work, Arms And The Man, in 1894. The success of this play allowed him to give up his job as a music critic, and to concentrate on playwriting full-time.

During refurbishment in 1905, part of Charing Cross stations roof fell in, and this smashed through the wall of the theatre, causing extensive damage. Three people in the station died, three workmen in the theatre died, and many people on both sites were injured. The theatre reopened in 1907 as the Playhouse Theatre, concentrating more on serious, modern drama.

In 1951 the BBC took the building over, and used it as a studio for many radio performances. The Goon Show, Hancocks Half Hour and Steptoe and Son were all recorded in the theatre. There were also live performances from Led Zeppelin, KISS, Queen, The Rolling Stones, and the Beatles. In 1967 a Pink Floyd concert from the theatre was broadcast live.

The BBC left in 1976, and the theatre has gone through the hands of a number of owners since then, including Jeffrey Archer and Ray Cooney. It has been the home to farces, the Peter Hall Company and Ibsen, and was refurbished by English Heritage in 1997. Since the turn of the millennium it has been home to hits as varied as My Name Is Rachel Corrie, Hedda Gabler, and the collection of jukebox classics, Dreamboats and Petticoats.

The Playhouse is easiest to get to from Charing Cross, as it is right next door (close enough to damage one building when the others roof falls in). It is also an easy walk from Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, or Waterloo (which has both tube and mainline services) from the other side of the river. It is conveniently situated just off the river, and is an ideal place to catch a show if you have spent the afternoon on the water.

Just north of the theatre is Trafalgar Square, and if you keep heading north you will find all of the bars and restaurants of Soho. The Playhouse is a good-sized theatre that puts on a wide variety of shows in the best traditions of West End theatres. If you are looking for a distinctive night out it is well worth bearing in mind.
