Situated in the highly respectable Bloomsbury area of London, home of great authors, the publisher of Harry Potter books and the University of London's sprawling campus, it is unsurprising that The Portland Hotel offers guests traditional British style from a bygone age, worthy of a country manor.
From the building's late Victorian facade, to the mahogany headboards in the bedrooms, this hotel echoes the genteel ambience of the surrounding area whilst eschewing any stuffiness. Guest rooms range from Studios to Superior rooms and Suites and include a wide range of special amenities in all rooms including hypoallergenic pillows and duvets, an iron and ironing board, kitchenettes and a complimentary newspaper. The room also has an LCD TV with satellite channels.
The hotel has a concierge service, who can arrange tickets for shows in nearby Theatreland, including musicals such as The Wizard of Oz and The Lion King; flowers to be left in your room; and airport pick up and drop off services. There is also a 24-hour reception and porter for around the clock assistance, which is particularly useful if you have an early fight to catch.
The Portland Restaurant and Bar is offsite from the hotel and offers peaceful dining in leafy surroundings, with a selection of freshly prepared meals. Whilst the restaurant offers picturesque views, you may wish to explore the area for an eatery with a little more character. Fantastic Mexican Wahaca offers light bites and a great range of tequila shots just a short walk away. Elegant dining is to be found in The Blue Door Bistro and The Court restaurant, both very close to the hotel, where you can also enjoy afternoon tea.
The area is also home to many incredible attractions. These include The British Museum, with over 7 million artifacts and a packed programme of seasonal exhibitions encompassing subjects as diverse as Chinese pottery, to Manga artwork. For a taste of the area's literary past, take a stroll around Gordon Square, the serene enclave where the Bloomsbury Group lived and socialised. Then head to the Charles Dickens Museum to learn more about one of Britain's most philanthropic and prolific authors.
Located just a ten minute walk from Holborn tube station, the hotel has fantastic transport links, whether you need to travel down the road or much farther afield. Holborn Station services the Central and Piccadilly lines. From here you can travel direct to King's Cross St Pancras Station (where the Eurostar terminates); many other areas of central London; and Heathrow Airport, which is about a 40-minute tube ride away. If you are driving to the hotel, it is situated just off the main A4 road, which can be accessed via the M4 and M25; however, guests should note that the hotel is in the congestion charge zone. The nearest parking facility is in Bloomsbury Square just a few minutes walk from the hotel.
To ensure you have a quiet nights sleep during your stay, Hotel-Assist recommend booking one of the hotel's spacious basement rooms as these are shielded from any street noise.
