Poultry in London EC2 is a continuation of Cheapside and leads into Mansion House Street at its eastern end, next to Bank Station. Poultry is named after the many poulterers that once lived on this street, once famous for the large amount of public houses located on it. Poultry, which has a junction with Old Jewry Street, leads east into Princes Street, Queen Victoria Street EC4 and Walbrook EC4.
Poultry is close to a number of places of interest within the financial district of the City of London, such as the Bank of England (100m east), Mansion House (50m south-east) and the Royal Exchange (150m east). Mansion House, located on Walbrook EC3, is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of London and was designed between 1739-57 by George Dance the Elder in a Palladian style, containing grand dining rooms and an elaborate entrance hall. The Royal Exchange, located between Threadneedle Street EC2 and Cornhill EC3, is home to designer fashion boutiques from Hermes, Gucci and Paul Smith and the contemporary Artisan gallery at 35 Royal Exchange EC3.
Poultry is home to a number of bars and restaurants, such as the exclusive Conran Coq d'Argent at 1 Poultry. A finalist in the 2005 Time Out Eating and Drinking Awards, the Coq d'Argent serves exquisite seasonal French cuisine in a spacious stylish dining room. In summer months guests can enjoy their breakfast, lunch or evening meal on the lawned roof terrace of the Coq d'Argent, which provides amazing views across the City, of landmarks such as St Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge and the Lloyd's Building.
Poultry is situated 500m east of St Paul's Cathedral, located on Ludgate Hill EC4. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, St Paul's is one of the most famous cathedrals in the world, due to its striking Portland stone exterior and its intricate decoration inside. Tours are often held at St Paul's Cathedral, which is open between 08.30am â€“ 16.00pm Monday to Friday. The Monument, another Wren creation constructed between 1671-1677, is located 500m south-east of Poultry on Monument Street and Fish Street Hill and can be reached via King William Street. Visitors can climb the 311 steps to the 41m high viewing platform here, which offers amazing views of London and landmarks such as Canary Wharf, Swiss Re tower and Tower 42. Moorgate Underground Station, which provides Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan and Northern line services, is 1 stop from both Bank and Liverpool Street. Liverpool Street Station runs London Underground and rail services and is home to the London terminal of the Stansted Express.
