Regent Park Tube Station

Hotels in and around Regents Park London

Regent's Park is a very picturesque Royal Park in London, so called because the land has been property of the Monarch since the Middle Ages, when Henry VIII appropriated the land from the church. It is not quite as large as Hyde Park in the south, but what it lacks in stature it more than makes up for in landscaped flower beds, private leafy enclaves and grand bandstands, which are great for sheltered picnics if you don't want to risk the changeable weather in London. Located close to the trendy area of Camden and the decidedly more upmarket St John's Wood and Primrose Hill areas, you can see a curious mix of designer clad socialites walking their pedigree pooches and scene kids with coloured hair and piercings, playing ultimate Frisbee, so it is a great spot for people watching. Much of the park's edge is lined with elegant white terrace houses designed by John Nash, and there are several trendy bars and restaurants just outside, although cheaper drinks can be found in Camden just a few minutes walk away.

The park covers 410 acres of land and includes a lake with a boating area, sports pitches for locals and visitors to use and children's playgrounds, so the area is great for a family visit, especially since the park also houses London Zoo. The Zoo is the world's oldest scientific zoo and does much to further ecological and humane practices in the study and upkeep of exotic animals. The zoo is also the site of the Zoological Society of London and has a strong focus on education and conservation, employing volunteers to help monitor native species around London and hosting a wide programme of talks and events to inform and amaze young and old visitors alike. The zoo was also pioneering in opening the first reptile house, public aquarium, and children’s zoo and insect house. With a huge variety of animals from around the world and the opportunity to get up close and personal with some, it is a truly charming place to visit. You can also visit the zoo after hours on dedicated nights, for a more grown up walk on the wild side, where you can buy alcoholic drinks and enjoy rides, games and a silent disco.

To experience the park in a more relaxing setting, you can visit the open air theatre, which shows plays in the summer months, such as Macbeth, Fantastic Mr. Fox and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Many of Britain's most beloved actors have treaded the boards here, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Dame Judi Dench and Ralph Fiennes. The performances also offer an open-air barbecue, temporary bar and picnic tables for the audience to provide their own snacks.

Regent’s Park tube station services the Bakerloo Line, which offers a direct connection to Paddington Station, where you can catch the Heathrow Express to the airport in 15 minutes and also offers links to other areas of central London. The park is also just a few minutes walk away from Baker Street tube station, which services the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan tube lines, from which you can directly access Paddington Station and King's Cross St Pancras Station for travel by the Eurostar. The park itself doesn't have many hotels nearby, and those that are will be very expensive, so it is worth looking in Paddington or King's Cross, which both have a huge selection of low-cost tourist class hotels, some of which are of very good quality.
