Essex may conjure up images of white stilettos and fake tans, and it may well live up to that image, but that doesn't mean that you should avoid it when considering where to stay in London. Romford in Essex, north east London, may not look like much to write home about, but it is a very lively district, with a great selection of very lively pubs and nightclubs and some of London's more unusual activities. Romford citizens may not be too shy and retiring on a night out, but you can be assured of a night you'll remember if you decide to mingle with the locals. The district is one, which has been recognised in the London Plan for development as the area contributes significantly to the economy and has more potential to do so.

Throughout history, Romford has been a haven of activity, from a centre where leather goods were produced, to a major industrial town where cloth burning, weaving, charcoal burning and brewing were all carried out. It retains this sense of industriousness, although this is largely focused on night time events and entertaining students who come for the cheap drinks. With over 11,000 punters passing through every night, it’s a sure sign that the pubs and bars are definitely worth dropping in to. From traditional pubs such as the Golden Lion, to chain bars and trendier establishments serving cocktails, you will find something to suit your tastes. Romford also has a great selection of gastropubs and restaurants, from chains such as Zizzi's and Pizza Express, to exotic cuisine such as Mexican at Chimichangas and Turkish at Mangal, to a wide section of post pub takeaways, you'll find something to satiate your appetite no matter what time it is.

For those who don't fancy downing sambucca shots, Romford has many other attractions. The district contains a Natural History Museum, a 3D cinema complex, ten-pin bowling, ice-skating and even a dog track, where you can have a flutter whilst socialising. You can also play paint ball, pick up some unusual finds at Romford's flea market and visit some of the area's mid-size art galleries. Romford is located fairly close to Stratford, so you can hop on a train and visit the Olympic Village and Stadium and Westfield Shopping Centre, a new and very welcome addition to the neighbourhood, which contains hundreds of shops, a cinema complex and many restaurants and bars.

Romford Railway Station connects with Stratford and London Liverpool Street Stations, so you can easily reach central London. For some Romford may be too far out the centre, but if you have visited the city before and want to see a new, and perhaps brasher, side of it, then Romford is a friendly, vibrant place to visit, where you certainly won't be bored. Hotels in the area tend to be much cheaper than in central London, but vary in quality, and the area can be noisy after dark, so those who want a peaceful night should look elsewhere.
