Royal Academy of Arts

The Royal Academy of the Arts is one of the most eminent art institutions in London. Established in 1768 by King George III with the goal 'to promote the arts of design' through education, debate and display; it has an auspicious roster of members and Academicians, including artists such as John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough, JMW Turner and more recently, Tracy Emin, Norman Foster, David Hockney and Anish Kapoor. Britain's best and brightest art stars have exhibited or studied at the institution and today only 60 students can partake in the Academy's renowned postgraduate programme.

The gallery's Summer Exhibition is the starting point for many young artists, architects, sculptors and designers, with over 10,000 pieces exhibited, representing over 5,000 artists. The exhibition has been held since 1769 and remains one of the most popular exhibitions in London. It is a great place to browse exciting new work and maybe purchase an investment piece before the prices rocket up. To facilitate the promotion of art, prize money is awarded at the event, which has previously been awarded to notable artists such as Marc Quinn, who sculpted his head made using his own frozen blood; Jake and Dinos Chapman, who are infamous for their disturbing pieces featuring apocalyptic McDonalds restaurants and reworking of Goya's Spanish Civil War etchings; and Chantal Joffe, whose paintings of women and children are highly sought after. As an independent institution and a charity, the Academy relies on profits from the Summer Exhibition to continue their work and to support postgraduate students.

Housed in historic Burlington House, built by famed architect Colen Campbell, the Academy is a must see on your visit to Mayfair. Whether you are visiting the Academy's permanent collection housed in the John Madejski rooms, or visiting one of the Academy's superb exhibitions, which have featured such diverse subjects as David Hockney's iPad paintings and Van Gogh's letters, you will be educated and inspired by the work on show. The Academy's collection is very impressive, with many works from its founding members: Constable, Turner and Gainsborough and the oldest institutional fine art library in Britain, making it an invaluable resource for those studying or with a voracious interest in the arts.

Based very close to Piccadilly, the Royal Academy is very well placed for nearby transport and accommodation if you are planning a visit. Green Park tube station is just a few minutes walk away, which services the Jubilee, Victoria and Piccadilly lines. From here you have direct links to Victoria Station (where the Gatwick Express Train terminates); King's Cross St Pancras Station (where the Eurostar terminates); and Heathrow Airport, which can be reached via the Piccadilly line. If you are planning to stay near the Academy, hotels in the vicinity can be expensive, but a good cheap option is the Thistle Hotel in Piccadilly, just a ten-minute walk away, which offers guests elegant bedrooms in authentic Victorian surroundings. For a higher budget, Duke's Hotel offers superb bedrooms with traditional fittings in bold colours and a bar once frequented by James Bond author Ian Fleming. The Stafford Hotel is another high-cost option, but with calm, contemporary rooms and excellent facilities, you may wish to pay extra. If you want the ultimate London experience, Brown's Hotel is renowned worldwide and has had famous guests such as Rudyard Kipling and Winston Churchill stay in the luxurious bedrooms.
