About the area
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in southwest London is probably one of the cleanest parts of city, with plenty of green spaces, including Hyde Park close by and pedestrian-friendly streets due to the high concentration of tourist attractions in the area.
It's certainly a far cry from the dark satanic mills of the industrial era, and maybe it is no coincidence that this is also the site of London's leading specialist heart and lung centre in the Royal Brompton Hospital.
"The Hospital attracted wealthy patrons such as Charles Dickens and Queen Victoria"
The Hospital was founded when Victorian London was in the grip of a tuberculosis epidemic, and because there was no known cure, consumptive patients were denied care. Recognising that urgent action was needed; Baronet Philip Rose founded The Hospital for Consumption and Diseases of the Chest in 1840, which was soon amalgamated with The West London Dispensary for Diseases of the Chest. Due to the hospital's sterling work, it soon drew the attention of wealthy philanthropists, such as author Charles Dickens and Queen Victoria, who donated £10 a year, which allowed the hospital to expand its operation.
"Some of the most complex and sophisticated surgery in the field"
The hospital moved to its current location in 1900 and has since opened sites at Bournemouth, Madeira, Sandgate, Hayling Island and Harefield Hospital.
Today, the hospital treats lung and heart problems exclusively and carries out some of the most complex and sophisticated surgery in the field.
The hospital is also a major centre of research, with 500-600 research papers produced a year, many of which are peer-reviewed in renowned medical journals such as The Lancet and New England Journal of Medicine.
To ensure that they are at the cutting edge of this medical field, the hospital also have a strong partnership with the national Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London, so you are in safe and capable hands here.
"The Hospital treats 150,000 patients each year"
As Europe's top-ranked respiratory research centre, the Hospital is able to treat 120,000 outpatients and 30,000 inpatients each year, from minor complaints to life-threatening conditions.
The hospital also has one of the fastest arrival-to-treatment times for heart attacks, so you will know whom to call if there are any emergencies during your stay, and the Hospital's on-site foetal cardiology service is groundbreaking in that it can offer care for infant lung and heart problems whilst still in the womb; a truly great example of London's world-renowned health care system.
"Just a 10-minute walk from Harrods Department Store"
The Royal Brompton Hospital is located just a 10-minute walk from the museums of South Kensington, the Royal Albert Hall and Harrods Department Store, and the exclusive shops along the King's Road are also close by, as is the Chelsea Physic Garden, a stunning, peaceful enclave where you can go for some rest and relaxation if you are undergoing treatment or visiting a relative in the hospital.
Hotels are plentiful around the Royal Brompton Hospital but one suggestion we have that may help is if you are anticipating a longer than average stay.
Then we would suggest looking at the NH Harrington Hall Hotel. The reason being that the bedrooms offer a high degree of comfort and the hotel is very close to the hospital (900m).
