The Royal Hospital Chelsea resides in elegant grounds; just a few minutes walk from the peaceful surrounds of Sloane Square and the King's Road. Home to the annual Chelsea Flower Show since 1913, the Sir Christopher Wren and Sir John Soane designed building is much more than just lush grounds. The hospital acts as a retirement and nursing home for British soldiers who are unfit to work or infirm, or who have been injured in the call of duty. The hospital was founded in 1682 by King Charles and upholds the beliefs it was built with, with over 300 soldiers from the Second World War housed as in-patients.

In-patients at the hospital are easy to spot when out and about in the local area, because a mark of honour of the Chelsea Pensioners (the colloquial term for those living in the home), is their bright red military jackets, bestowing residents with the nickname, 'The Men in Scarlet', although this nickname is not entirely accurate at this moment in time, as the hospital recently allowed the first female patient, and have relaxed their long-standing 'men only' rule.

Although retirement homes are a last resort for many, places at the home are highly competitive, due to the stunning surroundings and elegant residence of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. To become a Chelsea Pensioner, you must have been in active service for the British armed forces and/or have been decorated for service to your country, and to be accepted you must agree to take part in parades and publicity when required. In return, you get one of the most desirable addresses in London, free access to the Chelsea Flower Show, high-quality medical care, access to private leisure facilities and a programme of elegant concerts and events; all in all a great way to while away your twilight years.

The hospital was introduced because soldiers fighting for King Charles II in the Parliamentary army returned from war with few benefits and little income, so to address this disregard for people who have served his country, King Charles set about raising funds for the hospital. That the hospital is still functioning in its original form today is a touching sign of the pride in British tradition, which will hopefully continue for future soldiers. The hospital is open for tours of the opulent interiors and classical music concerts are held throughout the year, and of course, the Chelsea Flower Show is one of the biggest events in London's social diary, so this peculiar historical enclave is well worth visiting during your stay. Once you have taken a trip to the hospital, you can enjoy the cafes and shops of Chelsea nearby, or visit the Saatchi Gallery, so it is an excellent place to stay. MyHotel Chelsea offers stunning interior design, mixing vintage and contemporary in their rooms. Blakes Hotel is expensive, but offers exquisite rooms and a trendy bar and restaurant. The Brompton Hotel is not quite as grand, but offers low-cost accommodation in this notoriously pricey district and Harrington Court Serviced Apartments offer a discrete, peaceful home away from home.
