Search for cheap hotels near Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital
London is one of the most vibrant cities in the world, filled with cutting edge restaurants, world-renowned street markets, long-standing live music venues and a plethora of stylish bars and clubs, making it a feast for all the senses. As such, you don't want to have your experience impeded by ear, nose and throat problems whilst you are enjoying your holiday, so it is fortunate that London is also home to one of the world's leading specialist hospitals, the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital.
"The largest hospital of its kind"
Situated just minutes from King's Cross St Pancras Station, along Gray's Inn Road, the RNTNEH, as it is known colloquially, is the largest hospital of its kind in the UK and it is renowned worldwide for its expertise and high standard of care, with over a quarter of its annual 60,000 patients referred from abroad. The hospital provides treatment for everything from minor medical issues, such as the insertion of 'grommets' (valves inserted into the ear to drain fluid), to major surgical procedures and the Hospital covers every aspect of sensory salvation, including treatment for allergies, cochlear implants, rhinoplasty and facial plastic surgery, snoring and sleep disorders and speech and language therapy, so you will be well looked after from diagnosis to discharge.
"The deaf shall hear and the mute shall speak"
The hospital was founded in 1874 with the motto 'The deaf shall hear and the mute shall speak', which rather succinctly sums up the centre's mission statement. A grandiose claim perhaps, but considering that a third of patients referred to the hospital from other clinics with vocal problems, receive a different diagnosis on arrival, they may well live up to their motto yet. The Hospital is also a pioneering audiological research centre, as part of the University College London Ear Institute, which is situated on the sprawling UCL campus, just a ten-minute walk away.
"Vocal strain is most common amongst actors, barristers and teachers"
The hospital may have a rather esoteric focus, but ear, nose and throat problems are surprisingly common, with roughly 1 in 25 people affected by vocal strain, especially amongst professionals such as actors, barristers and teachers, which may not be much of a surprise to anyone! It is unlikely you will encounter problems whilst visiting the city, but it is comforting to know that there is such a respected centre there if it is needed. Whether you require treatment or you are visiting someone in the hospital, it is highly recommended to stay in a hotel nearby, as the surrounding area is filled with restaurants, galleries and bars and it is close to The British Library and British Museum. Hotel Megaro is a 4-star hotel in St Pancras, minutes away from the hospital, which offers bright and cheerful rooms. Novotel London St Pancras has the most inspired interior design of the chain's London hotels and offers reliably good service. Generator is a rather chic hostel, which may not suit everyone, but offers very low rates and a lively atmosphere, and Euro Hotel is a 3-star B&B, with low-cost room rates and a warm, homely feel.
