The Rydges Kensington Plaza, London offers luxurious, four-star accommodation in a Victorian hotel right in the heart of Kensington.
As an area, Kensington was relatively undeveloped until well into the nineteenth century. It was mainly fields which grew the fruit and vegetables that the city demanded. However, after the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park a number of sites were bought by the organisers for museums to make some of the exhibitions permanent. Kensington sprang up in a reasonably short time around these museums, which means that it is all of a fairly consistent architectural style, and it's characterised by large houses and wide roads, and some of the most desirable real estate in the capital. It is a wealthy area, and one with a low crime rate, and it has maintained the cultural heritage which was the reason for its existence. The Natural History Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum and The Science Museum are all still within South Kensington, as is the Royal Albert Hall. The district is also home to, or close to, some of Londons best shopping and greatest parks. You can spend on High Street Kensington, or in Harrods in nearby Knightsbridge, or you could stroll over to the Kings Road to discover the boutiques that made it so famous in the 1960s.
All rooms at the Rydges Kensington Plaza feature Rydges Dream beds, as well as a high-definition LCD television. There are freeview channels, as well as the option to purchase more than 100 watch-on-demand movies. The in-room safes are large enough to hold a laptop, and there is a minibar and tea and coffee-making facilities. The hotel has a gym, access to which is included in the room rate. All of the bathrooms have heated towel rails and mist-free mirrors. High-speed internet access (wired or wireless) can be obtained for a supplement. The rooms are all air-conditioned and come with a hair dryer and ironing board.
The Rydges Kensington Plaza offers a range of room types, from the standard single, all the way up to their Kensington Suite, which includes a complementary beverage from the hotels restaurant or bar. However, many of their rooms are undergoing renovations, renovations that were necessary according to some recent guests. Although this means that some of the rooms have been recently re-furnished, it may lead to some noise or disturbance. Some people have found the basement rooms not to be of the standard offered by the rest of the hotel.
The hotel is located just around the corner from Gloucester Road tube station, and so is ideally located whether you want to explore the quiet pleasures of Kensington, or hop on a tube and disappear into the centre of the city. It is also on a direct line from Heathrow, so is very convenient for travellers from overseas. The proximity to Gloucester Road, however, can lead to some issues with noise. In all, this is a four-star hotel in a great location with some issues regarding decoration and noise.
Although this hotel offers 4 stars rating we feel that this only applies to the superior bedrooms so we prefer to classify this as a good tourist class hotel.
