Created as one of Richard DOyly Cartes twin sister theatres that were intended to turn London into a great operatic city, the Savoy Theatre is probably best known for its association with the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. To this day, it remains one of the great homes of comic musical theatre in the city, and occasionally puts on revivals of the Gilbert and Sullivan shows that made it so famous.

Built in 1881 as a permanent home for his Gilbert and Sullivan shows, DOyly Carte made sure that the Savoy (like its sister, the Palace) was a technically impressive achievement. It was the first theatre to be lit using incandescent electric lights, a huge improvement on the heat, smoke and fumes caused by other methods of lighting a stage. There were exits on all four sides of the theatre, and fireproof materials were used to ensure the utmost safety. Other innovations they introduced were numbered seating, free programmes, whisky in the bars, and a policy of no tipping for the cloakrooms.

In 1929, Rupert DOyly Carte, Richards son, had the Victorian auditorium entirely torn down and replaced. The ceiling was painted to look like an April sky, everything had been moved, and the theatre now seated 1,200 (it had been down to 986 just before the restoration). Rupert wanted a suitable home for the famous operettas his father had commissioned, and the house reopened with a production of The Gondoliers. There have been regular revivals of Gilbert and Sullivans work at the theatre ever since, but the last one at the Savoy was in 2003.

The entire building was gutted by fire in 1990, and had to be completely rebuilt. The original 1881 designs had been kept, however, and the new theatre was built to the design of the old one. An extra storey was added, however, that houses a health club and swimming pool.

Nowadays, the theatre has a widely varied program, but it still retains its emphasis on comedy and musicals. It has been a regular home for the plays of Noel Coward, some of which premiered at the theatre, and productions by the DOyly Carte Opera Company or the Savoy Opera Company can be found here when they hit the West End.

The Savoy, which now includes a hotel as well as the theatre, is the spot where John of Gaunts palace used to stand, just off The Strand. It was destroyed during the Peasants Revolt in 1381, but has always been one of Londons most desirable addresses. Getting there is just a short walk up The Strand from Charing Cross, and it is also within easy walking distance of Temple tube, Covent Garden tube and Leicester Square tube. You could also walk across the river from the South Bank or from Waterloo.

The Savoy Theatre is the home to one of Britains most famous exports, the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera, and it maintains that tradition today. Whilst it is not just a home for revivals of classic operettas, it also hosts a number of new comic and musical shows, it is a must-see for any fan of Gilbert and Sullivan during their trip to London.
