School of Oriental and African Studies

London is renowned for its ethnically diverse community, which contributes to the city's vibrant culture. From Brixton Market's spicy Caribbean delicacies, to Elephant and Castle's delectable Portuguese eateries, to Green Cardamom and Riyahi Galleries for Indian and Islamic art, to Whitechapel's East London mosque, to Brick Lane's 'curry mile'; the city's mix of influences make it one of the most fascinating places to eat and explore in the world.

With such a melting pot community, it is important to engender an understanding of the history behind each culture and learn about the often-controversial issues surrounding integration and race. In this vein, the School of Oriental and African Studies, or SOAS as it is colloquially known, was established as part of the University of London campus, and has since become renowned for its excellent teaching on studies of Middle Eastern, Oriental and African history, language, politics, arts and much more.

The School was founded in 1916, when one imagines that the syllabus was somewhat different from today. This was a time when many artifacts had been brought back from the East to the UK by British explorers and these were offered for study in the School, alongside producing well-briefed British Administrators to travel to outposts of the British Empire.

As the Empire diminished, the School's focus on education increased, including a brief stint as a training camp for Japanese translators during World War II, after the centre was bombed. From fewer than 1,000 students when the School first opened, it now has over 4,500 and offers 400 mixed degree programmes and a range of Postgraduate and PhD options. The School is highly respected and often performs well in league tables, ranking 44th in the world and 11th overall in Europe in The Times Higher Education Supplement. The School also contains the UK's largest resource for materials relating to Asia and Africa and has over 350 members of specialist staff.

Courses at the centre include Buddhist Studies, Gender and Religion, Anthropology and Sociology, Music and Dance Performance, Jaina Studies, Migration and Diaspora, Jewish Studies, Media and Film Studies and a range of language courses.

The School encompasses The Brunei Gallery, The Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art and a Japanese style roof garden, so the Russell Square building is well worth a visit even if you are not considering a place there. The School also holds events, talks and film screenings, many of which are free, so it's a good idea to check if anything is on during your stay.

SOAS is located near Russell Square, a vibrant part of the West End, close to shops, nightlife and restaurants, with some very reasonable accommodation options, making it a great place to stay. Hotel Russell offers elegant bedrooms and a convenient locale for London theatres.

The Mercure offers 4-star comfort and a delicious breakfast buffet. The Portland Hotel offers traditional-style decor in a boutique establishment and the Grange Blooms Town House Hotel offers affordable rates and a prime spot for sight seeing.
