Selridges Store on Oxford Street

Selfridges Department Store, or Selfridges & Co as it is also known, is a well-loved institution in London. It may be the second largest shop in the UK, losing out on first place to Harrods in Knightsbridge, but what Selfridges lacks in stature, in more than makes up for in reputation. In recent years, under Mohammed Al Fayed's guidance, Harrods has been turned from a traditional British store into a rather gaudy, bazaar style store, which has turned away some long-standing customers who feel the store is now too tacky. In light of this, Selfridges has managed to shift people's perceptions of the store from a slightly stuffy, traditional brand, to Harrods cooler contemporary, with its sleek black and yellow brand, policy to stock emerging designers and brands and its commitment to luxury and quality.

A man from Winsconsin established Selfridges, called H. Gordon Selfridge, who opened the shop in 1909 and implemented some pioneering marketing techniques, which have been adopted by retail stores today. He let customers peruse the merchandise without assistance, he placed the most profitable counters front and centre, he introduced elaborate displays to entice customers and he is credited with coining the phrase 'the customer is always right'. Techniques, which have made the store the popular tourist destination, it is today, winning the accolade 'world's best department store' in 2010.

Selfridges is more of a shopping experience than most other shops you will find along Oxford Street, even before you enter you can marvel at the stunning, Daniel Burnham designed building and don't forget to take a look at the window displays, which have been heavily lauded, especially the store's Christmas windows, which are unveiled with much fanfare. Much like Harrods, Selfridges offers the crème de la crème of almost every conceivable item, although you cannot buy a gold bar here. Encompassing clothing, toys, electronics, books, perfume and beauty supplies and a delectable food hall, here you will also find unique artisan brands and collaborations, which you won't find anywhere else. You can also purchase items by some of the biggest brand names in the world if you wish, such as Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Burberry, Luella, Stella McCartney and many more. The toy section is any child's delight and the food hall sells everything from the strange to the sublime, at one time selling the world's most expensive sandwich, costing just under £100 and filled with Kobe beef. The store also has a very fine range of liquors and wines.

The store also hosts launches and events, the roof was once turned into a mini boating lake for jelly producers' Bompass and Parr's launch party and there are often tastings in the food hall and book signings to attend. True, Selfridges does cater to tourists and an upmarket clientele and you will likely pay a premium price here, but with such a huge selection, a well-earnt reputation and some unique products, it’s worth treating yourself. The store also has branches in other areas of the UK, with their own unique features, but the London store will always be the grandest and best.
