Shepherd Market - The Grapes Pub

If you think the name Shepherd Market refers to Mayfair's long-forgotten, woolly rustic past, you'd be wrong. This exclusive yet infamous area was developed in 1735 - 46 by architect called Edward Shepherd, who town planners thought could bring some much needed gravitas to the area. It seems somewhat of a misnomer when you see the affluent district Mayfair has become today, but the market was traditionally the site of a rowdy 15-day, 17th century fair; notorious for its wine women and roustabouts. Although Queen Anne and King George I tolerated it, the area was gentrified in the 18th century and it was decided that the fair was an unsuitable event for such an upwardly mobile district.

Shepherd's original design for the square featured a duck pond, two-storey market and a theatre, a new style and entertainment to suit the now more genteel residents. The theatre proved very successful, the May fair was moved to the lower class area of Bow and Mayfair, as it is known today began to emerge. The market became more distinguished, and in the 1920s, it was home to many wealthy and noble patrons, including diarist and writer of The Life of Samuel Johnston, James Boswell. P.G.Wodehouse’s quintessential Mayfair resident Wooster, with his faithful butler Jeeves was one of the area's more famous fictional residents. The market was also immortalised as a setting in Michael Arlen's successful book, The Green Hat, which was made into a film starring Greta Garbo.

The May fair tradition may have died out long ago, but Shepherd Market is still haunted by its scandalous legacy. In the 70s, rock legends Mama Cass (of The Mamas and the Papas fame and Keith Moon of The Who both died in 9 Curzon Street, just around the corner.  The market was also the setting of Jeffrey Archer's indiscretion with a prostitute for which he was later jailed.

The market is surrounded by Mayfair, Piccadilly and Curzon Street, which make the area an extremely convenient and vibrant place for visitors to stay, with many local attractions, shops, restaurants and pubs nearby. However, this very elite district doesn't offer many options for the budget traveller. The most reasonable room rates nearby are found in the Washington Mayfair Hotel, which offers guests cool contemporary chic in a pre-World War I, Art Deco building. Flemings Hotel is a bit more expensive, but offers a room with plenty of character and style, and great, personalised service, making this a good accommodation option. The Athenaeum Hotel is great for a treat with a dash of quirky English eccentricity in comfortable traditional rooms.

Shepherd Market's nearest tube line is Green Park, which services the Piccadilly, Victoria and Jubilee lines. From here you have direct links to Victoria Station (where the Gatwick Express Train terminates); King's Cross St Pancras Station (where the Eurostar terminates); and Heathrow Airport, which can be reached via the Piccadilly line.

If you do choose to stay in the area you will have plenty to do and see. Shopping enthusiasts will be placed near to some very exclusive stores including Bill Amberg and Tanner Krolle luxury bags, J&C Martin's fine silver jewellery and Simon Carter's traditional accessories for gentlemen. The area is also great for a night out as it contains exclusive clubs such as 'The In and Out Club' and '5 Hertford Street', and a range of traditional Victorian pubs for an authentic British drinking experience. Both Shepherd's Tavern and Ye Grapes were built in the 18th century and though they have been modernised, retain many of the pubs' original fixtures. If you want something a little more continental, Le Boudin Blanc is one of the best restaurants on the square, offering patrons 'the best French food outside France'. Whether you arrive in Shepherd's market to stay or just pop in for a drink you will be at the heart of Mayfair and steeped in London history, just be sure to leave the spirit of the May fair in the past.
