Shepherd's Bush might be one of London's more erratic areas, with lots of corners to explore, no unifying defining feature and the curious mix of gentrification, council housing and a very diverse community, which is common in districts outside of central London, but it is definitely worth exploring and seeing what hidden gems you can find. In between Hammersmith and Holland Park. Benefiting from a burst of development in the early 20th century, Shepherd's Bush was quickly turned into a residential district to cope with the rising population. Nowadays, Shepherd's Bush is home to a huge Australian and Kiwi community, like much of south west London and it has a Polish community, with a community centre in nearby Hammersmith as well as Somali, West Indian, Syrian, Lebanese, Iranian, Irish, Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities, who have all contributed to the restaurants, shops and markets in the area, giving it a unique bohemian vibe, which is slightly more refined than Brixton and more lively than in Earls Court.
For odds and ends and a delectable variety of snacks and street food, a visit to Shepherd's Bush Market is a must. In the surrounding areas there are also many fantastic restaurants of every variety you could want, including Polish at Patio, Middle Eastern at Abu Zaad, vegetarian fare at Blah Blah Blah and Greek at Vine Leaves Taverna. There are also many fantastic pubs in the area to grab a pint of real ale and mix with the locals.
A huge attraction in the area is the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire, which was built in 1903 and has since become one of London's premier music venues. It specialises in alternative and metal music, but recently has become more diverse, showing acts as mainstream as James Blunt. It's a grand venue, but smaller than the other notable London venues, so gigs maintain an intimate feel. Bush Hall is also in the area, which stages lesser-known bands and cabaret acts.
Shopping addicts will be thrilled to find the newly opened Westfield Centre in the area, an enormous shopping complex, which includes over 255 stores and a 14-screen VUE cinema. If you prefer your entertainment a little more cultured, Shepherd's Bush has a range of theatres, including Bush Theatre, The Lyric at Hammersmith, Riverside Studios, which do a fantastic selection of films and performances as well and The Finborough, which stages new playwrights' magnum opuses. Ginglik is a comedy club in the area, which provides a little light relief after all that drama, and you can tour the BBC Television Centre to get a glimpse behind the scenes and raid the props cupboard.
Transport links in Shepherd's Bush are very good. Shepherd's Bush Underground Station has overground links to the rest of London and is on the Central line, so you can be at Oxford Circus in 10-15 minutes. White City station has links to Paddington and Kings Cross St Pancras Stations on the Circle line, so you can catch the Heathrow Express Train or travel to the Eurostar terminal with ease.
