Sherlock Holmes Museum

In recent years, London's most famous fictional detective has become en vogue again, both in Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrel's director Guy Ritchie's films, where Holmes is something of a rough and ready action hero and bumbling Watson is played by the impossibly attractive Jude Law; and in the BBC miniseries, where Holmes is brought bang up to date, solving mysteries in modern England, played by Atonement actor Benedict Cumberbatch and where Watson is played as his lovingly befuddled self by Martin Freeman. It may seem like overkill, but these two performances are just the latest in a long line of actors who have portrayed the inimitable detective, following in Basil Rathbone and Rupert Everett's footsteps to name a few. Clearly Holmes is a hero for the ages and he has gained popularity around the world, which has made the Sherlock Holmes Museum at the character's stated address 221B Baker Street, an enduring and popular tourist attraction.

Sherlock Holmes first appeared in publication in 1887, in stories written by Scottish physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who also resided near Baker Street. Through well-loved stories of mystery, corruption and intrigue such as The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Sign of Four and The Adventure of the Speckled Band, Holmes has become one of British literature's best loved characters, but his appeal is also due to his instantly recognisable accoutrements, such as his deerstalker hat and comedically large pipe; his near psychic ability to deduce clues from the most complex of cases; his sophistication; his character's nostalgic appeal to those who wanted to grow up to be detectives; and his status as an anti-hero. Holmes may be on the side of good, but like all the best characters he is almost as flawed as his nemeses; an opium smoker, fist fighter, misogynist and all round curmudgeon, it is Holmes darker side that makes him as endearing as his intellect and wit.

Perhaps this is why The Sherlock Holmes Museum often has to inform visitors from abroad that the detective isn't real. One could be forgiven for thinking so, especially since Holmes is such a pervading presence in London, his silhouette even stamped on to the tiles that line Baker Street station, and the museum itself focuses much more on the detective than his creator, having restored the building to how it would have been in Holmes' day, with Victorian antiques, pipes and magnifying glasses to peruse, it's almost as if Holmes is about to waltz out and play a quick solo on his violin before deducing that something is afoot. In fact this is what does happen, as there are also actors in costume to relive some famous scenes.

The museum is a great day out for all the family, and a great way to introduce kids to this beloved literary rogue. It is also close by to The Planetarium and Madame Tussaud's waxwork museum, but enjoys much shorter queues in its more discrete location. So don your deerstalker, grab your magnifying glass and affect your best cut glass British accent for a day of sifting through the dregs of London's Victorian underworld.
