Search for cheap hotels near Shoreditch Town Hall
Shoreditch may be one of the trendiest areas in London, as the home of London's alternative arts scene and spiritual home of the London hipster, but unlike the picturesque Victorian monuments of Kensington and the ancient seats of power and monarchy at Westminster, it isn't known for its attractive buildings. Situated close to the East End, Shoreditch's history is rife with slum housing and industrial buildings, which have since been repurposed into designer apartments, although some shelled out tenements still stand, giving the area a shabby chic aesthetic throughout, which is admired by the bohemian residents. In light of this, Shoreditch Town Hall easily claims the right to the prettiest historic building in the area, rising out of the quirky shops and graffiti strewn bars like a stone wedding cake.
"More Light, More Power"
The Town Hall resides in the former Vestry Hall, which was built in 1866, and was described as 'the grandest in London', a claim that might come into question nowadays. Caesar Augustus Long designed it and in 1902 it became the Town Hall with the motto 'More light, more power', which took on an unfortunate, somewhat ironic meaning, when the building caught fire whilst extensions were being built. The building fell into disrepair during the 1960s and in recent years it has been placed on English Heritage's 'At Risk' register, and heavy restoration has taken place in the building.
"Weddings and civil partnerships"
Today, Shoreditch Town hall doesn't operate in an official capacity, but still serves the local community. The space operates as a charity and its large, lighted interiors and elegant facade make it a popular venue for weddings and civil partnerships, art exhibitions, fairs, markets, live music, dance, talks and theatre. The Town Hall has a full programme of events throughout the year and has big plans to turn the building into a cultural and community-based business hub in the next few years. So the Town Hall, which was dedicated to light in London, still has a bright future ahead.
"Hidden surprises in the winding back streets"
If visiting London, Old Street is a fascinating part of the city to visit, with plenty of hidden surprises in the winding back streets and abandoned warehouse buildings. Shoreditch Town Hall is just one of the venues dedicated to furthering and promoting arts and culture in London, so if you want to get a good idea of the state of the London art scene, Shoreditch should be your first port of call. The Town Hall is also just a 15-minute walk away from the City of London, a major finance and business district, with plenty of historic buildings and upmarket gastropubs to explore, so this is a great place to book your accommodation in. Days Hotel provides low-cost room rates just a 6-minute walk from the Town Hall. Andaz London is a very sophisticated, design-led hotel with impeccable service. Chamberlain Hotel offers a touch of old-world class with traditional fixtures and fittings, and Threadneedle's hotel is a boutique style establishment with stunning attention to detail in rooms.
