Set in a quiet residential street in West Kensington, a 20-minute tube ride from Trafalgar Square, Simply Rooms & Suites, Kensington makes a virtue of the fact that it doesn’t have a bar, restaurant, gym or other such facilities. Instead, it concentrates on providing high-quality accommodation, some of it self-catering, and friendly, efficient staff. The hotel is housed on a quiet residential street and it features interiors with contemporary styling.
The upmarket shopping of Kensington High Street is just a five-minute walk from the hotel. For an even more luxurious shopping experience, head to the Westfield shopping centre in Shepherds Bush. This has a special luxury section where international brand names like Jimmy Choo, Tiffany’s, Gucci and Joseph all have outlets. You can reach Westfield from the hotel on the Underground in about 15 minutes.
The hotel offers no meals but fortunately there’s an extremely broad range of restaurants within easy walking distance. Two restaurants serving Middle-Eastern dishes are a couple of minute’s walk away on Hammersmith Road, Yas and Alborz. Next to them there’s a Pakistani restaurant, Miran Masala, which also offers deliveries.
A little further away, but within a 15-minute walk, is Sticky Fingers, owned by former Rolling Stones bass player, Bill Wyman. The restaurant serves a sophisticated American diner style menu and the walls are covered in rare rock 'n' roll memorabilia.
If you want to escape the hurly burly of the city for a while you can do no better than take a 10-minute stroll to Holland Park. Highlights of this 22-acre haven include a Japanese garden with water features and gigantic carp, one of London’s most spectacular annual dahlia displays and peacocks freely roaming the park. In summer, you can even take in some opera at the open-air auditorium.
There are also some great pubs in the neighbourhood. The Scarsdale Tavern on Edwardes Square is a traditional Victorian pub with a frontage bedecked with flowers and plants. Inside, the pub has an old-world ambience and serves a selection of traditionally brewed ales as well as a bar menu. For a pub that serves more sophisticated dishes, try the Abingdon, just around the corner from the Scarsdale. The menu there includes dishes like Haunch of Venison with Chestnut Purée and Chicken Liver and Hazelnut Pâté with Quince and Red Onion Compote. Both pubs are within a 10-minute walk of the hotel.
If you love movies, you’re in luck, because there is a splendid cinema just a five-minute walk from the hotel. The Odeon Kensington on Kensington High Street still has its magnificent Art Deco frontage, although inside you’ll now find a modern multiscreen cinema.
It’s also easy to get to Kensington Gardens from Simply Rooms and Suites, by taking a bus or a taxi along Kensington High Street. There you’ll find the Round Pond, where enthusiast sail model boats and yachts at the weekends. Look out for the Elfin Oak, an ancient tree stump that’s been decorated with all manners of hand-carved and painted elves, birds and furry creatures. It’s truly one of London’s hidden treasures, and you’ll find it just at the entrance of the Diana Memorial Playground, built to commemorate the Princess.
